Reading Recovery Sues Ohio Over Ban on 'Cueing' in Literacy Instruction 11/06/2023

What do you do when you learn that the central premises of your instructional system are ineffective for the majority of children and that you have caused tremendous injury to scores of students over decades? Worth a repost⏬

This may ruffle some feathers - but please read 🔽

Teaching how to read may lead a student to discover that they enjoy reading, but experiencing a constant struggle to decipher the words on the page will NEVER make anyone love reading, no matter how many enthusiastic conversations we have with the child about the “love of reading.”

Of course, as avid readers, we want our children to love reading as it opens up new worlds for them to explore through the pages of a book. But this is an outcome and not an approach.

Without teaching students to be proficient readers, we are leaving students behind feeling inadequate and lost.

Children need to be able to crack the code to begin to experience reading for pleasure.

We don't find pleasure or enjoyment in something that is a constant struggle, nor do we all enjoy the same things.

Collectively our target goal for ALL students should be that they become literate, and then they can perhaps discover a love of reading (or not), but they can read, and that is power.
