Our Story
Mark DeGarmo Dance’s education programs include its scientifically-researched evidence-based Partnerships in Literacy through Dance & Creativity© program, an interdisciplinary prekindergarten to grade 5 dance arts and literacy program that integrates the 7-year elementary school curricula with dance, creativity, improvisation, composition, choreography, rehearsal, and performance skills; self-reflection; and journal writing. The National Endowment for the Arts called the program “a national model.” 1% of USA elementary schools can boast such a program, according to the National Dance Education Organization’s research.
New York audiences and critics have acclaimed Mark DeGarmo’s choreography and performance as “mesmerizing” and “fearless.” Las Fridas, an ode to Frida Kahlo and Mexico, is gender-crossing transmodal/performance art. DeGarmo developed Las Fridas and his solo program by integrating audience reflections gathered from MDD’s Salon Performance Series.
Mark DeGarmo, Ph.D.’s research includes transcultural, transdisciplinary embodied bricolage and improvisation, continual improvement of practice, and integrating trauma-informed teaching into MDD’s Professional Learning Program. His writing includes Transdisciplinary Performative Improvisation for University of Colima, Mexico’s performing and visual arts textbook, Teaching Choreographic Composition from a Transdisciplinary Focus (2019 publication in Spanish pending).
Mark DeGarmo Dance has presented numerous awards to artists and scholars, including: Arts Education Advocate Award 2019 to Miss America 2019 Nia Imani Franklin (Composer and Singer) and Educational Visionary Lifetime Achievement Award to: 2017 Patricia Aulestia (Dance Researcher and Writer), 2016 Deborah Jowitt (Dance Writer), 2015 Oleg Briansky and Mireille Briane (Classical Ballet Dancers and Teachers), 2014 Judith Malina (Actress, Writer, Director, Social Activist, and Co-Founder, The Living Theater), and 2013 Maxine Greene (Educational Theorist, Philosopher, Teacher, Writer, and Social Activist).
