Abraham Joshua Heschel School

Abraham Joshua Heschel School Our faculty work together to present unique curriculum bridging educational concepts with tenets of the Jewish faith.

The Heschel School is a unique pluralistic Jewish day school, emphasizing academic excellence as well as awareness of social and communal responsibility through an offering of a superb integrated curriculum of general and Judaic studies. Our progressive academic platform, which emphasizes scholastic excellence, integrates curriculum across disciplines, and features side-by-side teaching from Judaic and General Studies teachers in every classroom. Our approach is also synonymous with community. Everyone here -- children, parents, alumni faculty and staff-- matter deeply as we collectively strive toward a shared goal of inclusiveness, tolerance and respect. Our students thrive in this environment, and carry those convictions forward in their lives, both inside and outside of school. They become citizens of the world, truly embodying the spirit of tikkun olam (saving the world), hesed (charity) and social action/justice.

Heschel celebrated the beginning of the school year with the annual Opening Ceremonies, marking the milestones and transitions that accompany each stage of a student’s journey. Grade 12 students welcomed the Kindergarteners beneath a canopy of tallitot, and students in Grades 1, 6, and 9 made their way through arches created by their peers in Grades 10, 8, and 2, symbolizing the support and connection that unite the Heschel community.

Heschel High School students had the privilege of hearing from retired NYPD Chief Terri Tobin as we commemorated the 25th anniversary of September 11.

Chief Tobin shared her firsthand account of responding to the World Trade Center on 9/11, where she helped evacuate people from the South Tower before being injured in its collapse. She spoke with our students about courage, service, and resilience.

We are so grateful to Chief Tobin for sharing her story with our students and helping bring history to life in such a personal and meaningful way, and allowing the High School community to come together, reflect, remember, and learn.
