NASA’s next class of 10 astronaut candidates includes more women than men for the first time in the space agency’s more than 60-year history.

The six women and four men include engineers, scientists, and former military members. The new astronaut group comes on board as NASA works to advance its Artemis program to send humans back to the moon.

The Sunshine glares. I’m blind to the reality of this current moment. There is only fear running through my veins, as I find myself wandering aimlessly in a world that makes no sense. This is not where I’d hoped I’d be, this is not the world I’d wanted. But it is the world I live in. I must walk, though blinded, towards the light. The shadow behind me is too dark.

She is so precious looking at me with those sparkling eyes. I can’t help but smile. She’s been so good all day, sitting mostly quiet and by my side. Asking for attention and letting me go back as I need. I hate to disappoint her so I’m sure to bend down and give her kisses on her big ole noggin. I cannot understand why anyone would judge her simply for what she is. She had no choice, and we will love her all the more for it. I can’t wait to be done with my daily commitments so I can get down on the floor with her and see that beautiful pink belly looking up at me as I give her the love, she deserves.

I’ve always found this type of question difficult. How does one describe an emotion, or many emotions, really? Some words that come to mind: cold, alone, loved, tired, content, confused, calm, empty, afraid, unsure, easy, silent. Silent. Yes. Silence. There is silence in my emotions. Silence like screaming so loud there is no sound. Silence like sitting calmly meditating in the sun, a soft breeze dancing by. Silence like movement, my body moving to no music, no rhythm as I walk through this world. I am right now walking on an edge. The silence between emptiness and splitting open.

Dark except for one light, just a stand, a bulb, and a pull chain. The space around her is vast, no matter the size, in the darkness. She is alive and yet only a space; a space that holds multitudes of emotions, experiences, and lives. Like a church, she is sacred, welcoming, offering stories that fuel lives. She entertains, and though she alone stays motionless, she is how all the beauty is created. She is the stage.
