What if P-TECH Became Part of NYC's Enrollment Strategy?
As a member of the design team and founding principal of the nation’s first Pathways in Technology Early College High School P-TECH, I Rashid Ferrod Davis have watched the Grades 9-14 model evolve from an educational experiment into a pathway connecting high school, college, and careers.

With New York City now confronting declining enrollment and the future of small schools, I believe it is time to ask a bigger question: Could P-TECH also become part of the city’s enrollment and campus-renewal strategy?

Vocational schools offer a series of courses which directly prepare individuals in paid or unpaid employment in jobs that have requirements other than a baccalaureate or advanced degree.

A New NYC Leadership Era
The city's mayor belongs to the Bronx Science Class of 2010, the same high-school graduation year in which P-TECH was announced. There are now 12 P-TECH schools across all five boroughs of New York City. Two of the 12 are principals who I hired as assistant principals at P-TECH Brooklyn. There are now 2 graduating classes that have reached the milestones of 10 years after 12th grade, the class of 2015 and 2016.

Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani was elected mayor in 2025 and took office January 1, 2026.

The Foundation- 296 students across initial cohorts—85% Black and 75% male—the school dramatically expanded STEM inclusion.

P-TECH consistently crushed local benchmarks, achieving The City University of New York college readiness rates up to 67%—outperforming New York City baselines by up to 30 percentage points.

Additionally, postsecondary enrollment reached 79% for the Class of 2017, beating citywide averages by 20 percentage points.

P-TECH demonstrates that structural support creates extraordinary postsecondary success for underrepresented students.

Pathways in Technology Early College High- high school, college, and industry redesigned as one pathway so that students reach college STEM credentials years earlier than traditional educational trajectories would predict.

The traditional pathway measures who finishes STEM in six years. P-TECH asks how many students can reach a STEM college credential by Year 14.
