University Plaza Nursery School

University Plaza Nursery School Parent Cooperative Preschool University Plaza Nursery School is a parent cooperative school for children ages 2-6 located in the heart of Greenwich Village.

Established in 1967, UPNS has been serving children and families from NYC's downtown community for over 45 years. At UPNS, our goal is to provide a nursery school experience that builds upon the natural curiosity of each child. We foster the learning process by encouraging children to explore their own interests in a warm, caring, child-centered setting. Our play-based program incorporates early literacy, math, science, and art within the emergent curriculum. As part of a co-op, teachers, children, and parents work together to create a learning environment that respects the uniqueness of each child. Our teachers have worked to create a nurturing atmosphere where children can play and explore a variety of open-ended materials. We value community and trusting relationships at our school. We consider social and emotional growth to be some of the most important aspects of learning. Children are supported as they learn important conflict resolution skills through play and their relationships within the classroom community. It is important to us that children leave UPNS with the social, emotional and academic skills to succeed in Kindergarten.
