The Subotnick Financial Services Center was particularly busy on a recent humid morning in late July. Several dozen young people and a smattering of adults in the Sidney Lirtzman Financial Seminar Hall, just outside the Wasserman Trading Floor, listened as the Zicklin School’s Associate Dean Marios Koufaris welcomed the “new market experts and future titans of Wall Street” to the prize-giving ceremony of the annual High School Stock Market Challenge. 📈

The challenge, explained Gideon Pell, the Subotnick Center’s director, was an opportunity for rising high school seniors from across New York City’s five boroughs to spend five weeks learning the basics of investing and trading by managing a virtual portfolio of $500,000 in “play money” in a simulated trading environment.

This year, 33 students representing 17 area high schools took part in the challenge—a significant increase from the 22 who participated last year. Students received introductory financial education classes every Monday for five weeks and spent four weeks trading; they were required to diversify their portfolios by investing in at least five different companies.

It's a full-circle moment for LaToya C. Crawford (BBA, '03) as she makes her way back to Baruch College's Max Berger Pre-Law Program to serve as a Peer Pre-Law Mentor for the 2026–2027 cohort. ⚖️🎓

Crawford's commitment to advancing education and representation in marginalized communities led her to serve leadership roles in non-profit organizations and schools across the U.S. The choice to go to law school was to fulfill a "lifelong calling to pursue justice, advocacy, and generational change," Crawford said. 💬

Now pursuing her Juris Doctor at North Carolina Central University School of Law, Crawford is bringing her experience to inspire students. "I understand how invaluable mentorship can be throughout the law school application process. The guidance, encouragement, and wisdom I received along the way made a lasting difference, and I am grateful for the opportunity to pay that forward," Crawford shared in a LinkedIn post. 🤝
