Senators just voted to stop paying themselves during government shutdowns, but the rule won’t kick in until after the next election.

In May 2026, the U.S. Senate unanimously passed Sen. John Kennedy’s resolution to withhold senators’ salaries whenever the government shuts down.

Because of the 27th Amendment, pay withheld before the November 2026 election would be placed in escrow and released after the congressional session ends. After the election, the rule would fully take effect, meaning senators would no longer receive pay during a shutdown.

Kennedy’s argument was simple: if federal workers can miss paychecks because Congress fails to keep the government open, lawmakers shouldn’t keep collecting theirs.

The measure passed 99–0, a rare show of bipartisan agreement, after the country endured a combined 119 days of government shutdowns between October 2025 and May 2026.

The message is hard to miss: if Congress can’t keep the government running, why should taxpayers keep paying the people responsible?

A year ago the number was $200 million. He said he’d pay for it himself, with help from “patriot donors.” Nobody would be out a dime.
The number is now $927 million. And according to records reviewed by the Washington Post, most of it is coming out of your pocket.

Here’s the part worth sitting with. Instead of asking Congress for the money, the administration pulled funds from other agencies and from private donors and funneled them into a single account — an account that normally holds a few million dollars for routine White House upkeep. Fixing a leaky roof. That’s the account. Confidential contracts show it’s now the funding vehicle for a gold-columned ballroom, an underground security complex, a helipad, a redesigned West Wing, a new visitor screening center, and a Lafayette Square overhaul.

No vote. No appropriation. No line item anybody could point at. The Post called it the most expensive overhaul of the White House in more than eighty years, and the only reason we know the size of it is that reporters found the paperwork.

A federal appeals court already told him to stop. Two judges wrote that they could find no instance in American history of a president unilaterally demolishing substantial portions of the White House using privately collected funds. Until now. He’s vowed to take it to the Supreme Court.

And look — a president wanting a nicer event space isn’t a scandal. Presidents redecorate. But there’s a difference between redecorating and quietly assembling nine hundred million dollars through a maintenance account so nobody has to vote on it. One is taste. The other is a workaround.

If it’s really private money, publish the donor list. If it’s really a security necessity, take it to Congress and win the vote. The refusal to do either is the entire tell.

In April, a dozen Navy families said something was wrong aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln. The Secretary of Defense posted two words: fake news.

It is August. The ship has been at sea more than 260 straight days. And this week a United States senator sent that same Secretary a letter demanding to know what is happening on that carrier.

Here is what the families have put on the record. Annabelle Loma’s husband has served thirteen years. She learned from the ship’s ombudsman that he had tried to go over the side, and that he is now on medical hold. What terrifies him isn’t what happened — it’s the paperwork. He thinks burning out will cost him his career. “That’s not what he should be worrying about right now,” she said. She’s right.
Maria Rodriguez’s husband was standing watch when he saw a shipmate at the edge. He shouted, ran, grabbed their arms, and pulled them back. Three more sailors came running. He told his wife he’d never felt anything like it.
That is what “fake news” looks like from the inside.

The Lincoln left San Diego on November 21 with about 5,000 sailors and Marines aboard, headed for a routine Pacific run. The war with Iran redirected it to the Middle East. May came and went. Families raised moldy showers, broken toilets, no hot water, food shortages, mail lost for months, missed births, missed funerals. One parent said their daughter believed she would die on that ship.

The Navy now says it hears them loud and clear. The acting secretary says the Theodore Roosevelt is being prepped to relieve the Lincoln — but won’t say when, citing operational security. Sen. Blumenthal has written to the Pentagon. Rep. Mike Levin is calling for a full investigation, and he put it plainly: these service members are not lying to the people who love them.

A seven-month deployment is in its ninth month, for a war Congress never authorized, with no return date, because “indefinite” is the actual policy. Somebody has to live inside that word. Right now it’s five thousand people on a boat.

These families were called liars once. They came back anyway. The least the rest of us can do is not look away the second time.

CNN’s KFile pulled the receipts this week. In an April 2023 episode, El-Sayed floated changing two words in the Constitution: strike “the right to bear arms,” insert “the right to have health care.” His pitch was that swapping those two words would fix two of America’s deadliest problems at once. In a 2024 clip he told his audience that fireworks suck and asked people to find some other way to mark the Fourth. In an episode still public today, he questioned whether football can be ethical and tied the sport’s ethos to the same narratives once used to justify slavery.

His campaign says CNN cherry-picked old podcasts that don’t reflect what he believes now. Fine. People’s views move. Mine have.
But here’s what nobody’s explaining: if these were just outdated takes he’s outgrown, why hide them? You defend an evolved position. You don’t padlock it. A man who genuinely changed his mind leaves the tape up and says “I was wrong, here’s why.” A man who’s worried about November makes 100 videos disappear eleven days after winning a primary.

He beat Haley Stevens by a hair. Now he’s up against Mike Rogers in a race that could decide the Senate. And the first move he makes is scrubbing the archive.

Michigan doesn’t need to guess what he believes. It needs to ask why he stopped saying it out loud.
