Sophia Hammond, a fourth-year student at Bowdoin College, interned at JICUF’s New York headquarters from June through August. Sophia spent the fall term of 2025 at ICU as an exchange student and worked with each staff member on a variety of projects throughout the summer. From August 26 to 28, JICUF hosted the second Summer Waterside Camp (SWC). Working with ICU physical educations instructor Masao Higashiyama, we took a group of 23 students including ICU students and students with refugee backgrounds attending other universities and language schools to Lake Motosu in Yamanashi. Students from Japan, Ukraine, Afghanistan and Syria had a chance to enjoy water sports, cook, and spend time with each other, forming new friendships. https://www.jicuf.org/2026-swc-at-lake-motosu/

On July 29-30, a conference titled “Exploring Education Pathways for Refugees in the Republic of Korea and Beyond” was held at the Embassy of Canada to Korea in Seoul. As a member of the Global Task Force on Third Country Education Pathways, JICUF contributed to its planning, which began a year earlier. Hazem Majeek, the final recipient of the Syrian Scholars Initiative (SSI) scholarship, graduated from ICU in July. With his graduation, SSI comes to a close. The program has since been replaced by Japan Education Pathways (JEP), which continues to support students impacted by war.
