🌟 Spotlight on the Cambridge Union: A Legacy of Debate and Free Speech 🌟
Founded in 1815, the Cambridge Union is the oldest continuously operating debating society in the world and a global leader in debate, public speaking, and intellectual exchange. For over two centuries, it has shaped critical thinkers and influential leaders, securing its reputation as one of the most prestigious forums for free speech and open dialogue.
The Union has hosted some of the world’s most prominent figures, including Winston Churchill, John F. Kennedy, Margaret Thatcher, and the Dalai Lama. In more recent years, it has welcomed modern thought leaders such as Bernie Sanders, Stephen Hawking, and Baroness Hale, continuing its tradition of fostering civil discourse and bold ideas.
But the Cambridge Union’s impact extends far beyond its historic chambers. As an educational charity, it actively promotes the art of debate worldwide through workshops, scholarships, and outreach programs designed to reach students from diverse backgrounds. With over 12,000 students participating annually, these initiatives equip young minds with lifelong skills in public speaking, critical thinking, and balanced discussion.
A key example of the Union’s global influence is the Cambridge Schools' Debating Competition, which draws the brightest young minds from across the world. Thousands of students engage in British Parliamentary debate each year for a chance to compete at Finals Day, held in the Cambridge Union’s iconic halls.
In collaboration with the Cambridge Union Society, LearningLeaders organizes the annual Cambridge Asia BP (CABP) Championship series, which serves as a qualifier for Finals Day. Over the past four years, more than 500 teams from 15 Asian countries have competed, with Ateneo de Manila Senior High School (represented by Naomi Ang & Anton Abiera) making history as the first team from Asia to win the Cambridge Schools Finals.
