I think what this piece is saying is that societies get these widely-held simplistic notions that simply do do justice to the complexity and situational nuances of reality/lived experience -- and it's simply simpler to valorize more than can be warranted a small elite list. Having bought into that, one need not think or examine much thereafter.
t neither takes a contrarian stand, nor offers effective consolation, and this awkwardness no doubt derives from having to say something about how we choose to believe in things because they are easy, not because the are just/accurate.
