Latin/Greek Institute The Latin/Greek Institute offers intensive, total-immersion programs that enable students to cover two to three years of Latin or Greek in a single summer.

The Institute is a joint collaboration of Brooklyn College and the CUNY Graduate Center. All programs are team-taught by dedicated, experienced instructors. Hourly rotation of staff provides for exposure to a variety of approaches, and there is a low student-faculty ratio. Our textbooks, now used widely at universities across the country, were developed specifically for the Institute.

This past Friday, LGI students, faculty, alumni, and friends packed the upstairs lounge of the Playwright Irish Pub for the annual end-of-the-summer (“graduation”) party. The gathering capped off what has been, by every account, an incredible and incredibly rewarding summer. The event included (almost) all of its longstanding traditions—inter alia, the recitation and translation of Latin and Greek poems and menus, and the singing of Gaudeamus Igitur. It also featured more recent additions, such as an extensive slideshow broadcast on multiple large screens throughout the space. This visual retrospective highlighted the history of the LGI before segueing into a week-by-week retelling of the current summer. Hard to believe, but Monday opens Week 9 of the Institute's 53rd summer - and what an incredible summer it has been. Following are photos from the past few weeks, including scenes from an absolutely epic Hoplite Challenge Cup, a visit by the SLI to the American Numismatic Society, Rita leading an afternoon sight-reading of Ovid, and SLI and SGI lectures. Details about all in the forthcoming newsletter. To give you an idea of how amazing and exceptional this summer has been, materfamilias normally limits herself to three classroom appearances (see the LGI Winter 2025 Newsletter, page 11). This summer, however, she has been so impressed by and had such a good time with Latin students, that she has ASKED to teach more! I A truly remarkable and extraordinary summer - in every regard.

εἰς ὄνυχα πάντα - summer 2026. By the end of the first week of the Institute, students know what Floyd Moreland meant by “beyond the intensive.” The first half of the programs (five weeks in the SLI, six in the SGI) are focused on mastering essential morphology, grammar, and syntax. Students also begin to reading extended, original texts as soon as possible: on Day 10 of the SLI, students sightread Catullus XIII together. This week (week 5), SGI students will engage their first extended passages of Plato (Gorgias). Here’s a look at the last four weeks of what has been a very full, very energetic summer. This year’s traditional week one First Friday Social was especially meaningful. As afternoon reviews let out, students made their way to the ninth-floor suite to mix and mingle with faculty, classmates, and students in the other basic program. About an hour later, more guests arrived—including alumni, former faculty, and friends with no direct connection to the Institute—and the event gently segued into a memorial for the Institute’s late founder, Floyd L. Moreland. As a slideshow of Floyd’s life and career played on multiple screens throughout the room, Rita, Hardy, Bill (Pagonis), and GC’s VP of Student Affairs Matt Schoengood shared their memories of the conditor. To no one’s surprise, Rita’s comments were especially moving. Though it was a memorial, we endeavored to keep the event festive—as Floyd would have undoubtedly wanted. Day One of the 53rd summer of the Latin/Greek Institute is exactly two weeks from today, and we'll be welcoming one of the largest cohorts in decades! As shared previously, the first week will close with a tribute to the Institute’s late founder, Floyd Moreland (Friday, June 12). This will be a celebratory and joyful affair - as Floyd would have wanted. If you’re around and able, please join us for an early dinner and recollection at the CUNY Graduate Center. At the close of the first week, immediately following the traditional first Friday social (June 12), we will celebrate the life and legacy of the LGI’s founder, Floyd Moreland, who passed away last May.
