The Winter 2025 LGI newsletter is out! This edition is the largest ever, packed with updates, historical trivia, and information about the summer 2025 programs. As promised, it also includes a detailed account of last summer's absolutely legendary Hoplite Challenge Cup. Enjoy!
Latin/Greek Institute
The Latin/Greek Institute offers intensive, total-immersion programs that enable students to cover two to three years of Latin or Greek in a single summer.
The Institute is a joint collaboration of Brooklyn College and the CUNY Graduate Center. All programs are team-taught by dedicated, experienced instructors. Hourly rotation of staff provides for exposure to a variety of approaches, and there is a low student-faculty ratio. Our textbooks, now used widely at universities across the country, were developed specifically for the Institute.
Operating as usual

Salvete Alumni et Amici Instituti!
As you know, there is nothing like a summer spent at the LGI. Since its founding in 1973, the Institute has trained almost 3,000 students in Latin and, since 1978, Ancient Greek. Although the Institute’s pedagogical approach has remained almost unchanged from that established by its visionary founder, Dr. Floyd L. Moreland, the cost of running the Institute has not. With each passing year, New York State and CUNY regulations make it increasingly more difficult for us to, inter alia, purchase basic classroom supplies, pay faculty for curriculum work, and provide emergency assistance for students in need. Today, on the occasion of Giving Tuesday, please help us ensure that the same opportunity – and, especially, quality of experience – that you had will be here for others in the years and decades to come by contributing to the LGI’s operating endowment. A gift of any size is an enormous help, and the number who give helps send a powerful message to the University about the importance of the Institute. Our campaign motto: Together, agemus monumentum aere perennius...

Spread the word! The 52nd summer of the LGI: Basic Latin, Basic Greek, and Upper Latin (online) on offer!

Greetings Alumni and Friends of the LGI,
This year, the LGI is participating in the University’s Giving Tuesday campaign. The money we raise will go towards our nascent operating endowment, which, inter alia, supports faculty and curriculum development, and provides the Institute (and Institute students) with emergency funds. Through the generous pledge of an alum, all gifts will be matched up to $5,000. Please give to the extent that you can. Both the amount we raise and the number of donors helps send a powerful message to CUNY about strength and vitality of the Classical languages, and the importance of the Institute in this regard.

…quod iam conficietur Institutum: although final exams are Monday and the program wrap-up Tuesday morning, graduation was yesterday, the last Friday of the Institute. As always, the occasion was festive, if somewhat bittersweet: the experience has forged durable (in many cases, lifelong) friendships among the students and deepened the camaraderie of the faculty. For both, a return to normalcy will be an adjustment. There’s really nothing like a summer at the LGI.

Sed fugit interea, fugit inreparabile tempus...scenes from Week 8 of the 2024 LGI.

The 2024 Hoplite Challenge Cup was one for the record books. The students came with a plan - and a good one at that. At the 3:40 start, the room was largely empty save the faculty team (reinforced by two SGI alums) and a handful of spectators. After some commotion in the hall, the ὁπλῖται entered cheering and carrying signs, many also dressed as SGI faculty member Bill Pagonis. The students’ energy and esprit de corps were electric and propelled them to a 10-5 victory. As noted, one for the record books, so stay tuned for a full write-up in this year's newsletter. For now, enjoy the visual reportage…

Scenes from days one and two of the 51st summer of the CUNY Latin/Greek Institute, which began yesterday (Monday, June 10). A stellar faculty lineup this summer, including a few Institute legends (together on stage for the first time in decades).

After resolution of an access issue, we are delighted to resume our LGI History series (with #47). In 2013, Hardy Hansen retired as director of the Institute – though, like Rita, he has remained involved in myriad ways: as instructor (generally the first three weeks of the SGI), mentor to faculty, and adviser to subsequent directors and program chairs. His contributions to the Institute and the teaching of Greek are inestimable. At his 2014 retirement party, he was gifted with an antique print of a tapir – an animal for which he has a well-known fondness.
