The Permanent Mission of Afghanistan to the United Nations in New York is pleased to announce the upcoming vacancy in its unpaid internship program. Selected interns must meet a variety of requirements.

Internship Description:
An Intern will perform essential roles at the Permanent Mission. He or she will assist the Ambassador’s office, diplomats and/or the Mission in whatever tasks are necessary.
Duties could include:
• Attending meetings at the UN, taking notes, and writing meeting summary reports;
• Administrative tasks;
• Research on relevant topics of interest to both the Mission and relating to the intern’s area of expertise;
• Contributing research towards briefs, proposals, and statements for the delegation;
• Handling high-level, confidential documents; and
• Other longer-term projects as necessary, including contributing to thematic research projects for the Ambassador and the Mission.
• We expect that interns will be able to cover their own travel, housing and all other related expenses for the duration of their unpaid internship.

The Mission's interns have the unique opportunity to combine their own interests with that of the Mission. Interested individuals are encouraged to take the initiative in pursuing their interests related to the Mission and the United Nations as a whole, including working directly with delegates focusing on particular Committees of the General Assembly. These Committees are divided by subject:

• First committee – Arms proliferation, global security, nuclear nonproliferation
• Second committee – Economic and development issues, sustainable development
• Third committee – Drugs, human rights, women and children issues, development issues
• Fourth committee – Special Political and Decolonization
• Fifth committee – Administrative and budgetary issues for the UN system
• Sixth committee – Legal issues, ICC, ICJ, International Law of the Sea

The Mission’s responsibilities cover a wide range, and interns must be prepared to assist as needed. Interns are expected to keep up with the fast-paced working environment and keep up-to-date on news about the United Nations and Afghanistan. Dedication and flexibility are key components to successful internships, and requirements of this position.

Requirements and Preferences:
• Interns must be available to intern for at least three months. Preference will be given to candidates who can intern full-time, five days a week for the full three months or longer. Hours are typically 9:45 am to 6:00 pm.
• Applicants must demonstrate a focused interest and past engagement related to Afghanistan and/or the United Nations
• Interns must be fluent in English. Knowledge of Dari is helpful but not required. Knowledge of all other languages will also be helpful.
• Preference will be given to applicants pursuing or having recently completed Master’s degrees and undergraduates in the final stage of their Bachelor’s degree.
• Interns must be trustworthy in handling confidential materials and information

About the Mission:

The Permanent Mission of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan is responsible for representing Afghanistan’s interests at the United Nations. Afghanistan has been a member of the United Nations since 1946, and although the country has gone through significant changes in the past 60 years, Afghanistan remains dedicated to the values and principles enshrined in the United Nations charter. Recently, international cooperation has become even more crucial for Afghanistan and for the world. Afghanistan is committed to pursuing open, friendly dialogue in both bilateral and multilateral forums, and sees the United Nations as an important platform for international diplomacy.
