📈💙 Math is moving up at Democracy Prep.

Across our middle schools, scholars made incredible gains in math, including 34% growth at Democracy Prep Harlem Middle, 19% at Bronx Prep Middle School, and 13% at Democracy Prep Charter Middle. ✏️✨ And at Bronx Prep Middle, sixth grade math proficiency reached 75%, with 31% growth and performance 22% above the New York State proficiency average.

Those numbers reflect so much more than a test. They reflect great teaching, scholars who kept pushing, and educators who believe deeply in what every child can achieve. 💛

This is what happens when great teaching meets belief in all scholars.

Today was Dad’s Take Your Child to School Day at Democracy Prep and the energy in the building was something special. Nothing hits like seeing a father walk through those doors with their scholar. 🙏✨

Allow Us To Reintroduce Karl 💙🎓

In 2014 he walked through our doors as a seventh grade scholar commuting nearly an hour each way, learning discipline he did not know he needed, and being pushed to rise to a bar he had never been held to before. He graduated. Stayed connected. Went to Baruch. Found his path in Human Resources. And then came back home.

Today Karl serves as a Talent Acquisition Manager at Democracy Prep, helping identify and bring in the very educators who will shape the next generation of DP scholars. The same question he asked as a curious student watching demo lessons is now the question he asks every single day professionally: Who are the people we want in front of our scholars?

As Democracy Prep celebrates 20 years we are proud to celebrate the alumni who did not just benefit from this mission they came back to build it.

Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to recognize and celebrate the histories, cultures, languages, traditions, leadership, and contributions of Hispanic and Latine communities.

At Democracy Prep, this celebration is part of who we are.

Our scholars, families, educators, and staff bring stories, traditions, languages, and lived experiences that make our school communities stronger.

During Hispanic Heritage Month, we join communities across the country in placing an extra spotlight on the beauty of culture, the strength of family, the power of language, and the brilliance of our Hispanic and Latinx scholars, families, educators, staff, and leaders.

At Democracy Prep, that appreciation and celebration extends far beyond this month and is part of how we honor our communities every day.

📈✏️ Strong results. Stronger momentum.

Our grades 3 through 8 scholars showed up, and the results speak loudly.💙

Math proficiency grew 16%, eight times New York State’s proficiency growth. 💛

ELA remained strong even as New York State and New York City averages declined. 🔬

Science proficiency reached 51%, outperforming both the New York State and New York City proficiency averages. But numbers like these do not happen by accident.

They happen when scholars are surrounded by educators who believe in them, challenge them, support them, and keep adjusting until they get what they need. 👩🏽‍🏫💙 Because every scholar deserves a school that believes in what they can achieve.

Literacy is dignity. Literacy is a human right. Literacy is power.

Today, we celebrate the 60th anniversary of International Literacy Day, a global reminder that the ability to read, write, think critically, and communicate expands what is possible for people and communities.

This year’s theme, “Literacy for People, the Planet, and Prosperity,” calls us to continue building a more literate, equitable, and sustainable world.

At Democracy Prep, that work begins with our scholars.

Last year, as literacy results declined across New York City, New York State, and the charter sector, Democracy Prep scholars held steady. Our ELA performance now exceeds both city and state averages. That did not happen by accident. It reflects the brilliance and hard work of our scholars and the skill, belief, and relentless commitment of our teachers.

This year, we are building from that strength with a stronger curriculum grounded in the science of reading, intentional professional development and support for our teachers, and small group, differentiated instruction that gives every scholar the support or challenge they need to keep growing.

We celebrate steady. But we do not intend to stop there.

Every child deserves to read with confidence, write with power, think critically, and discover a world of possibility through literacy.
