Examine the language and techniques of watercolor painting from the figure. Paint using a variety of strategies derived from current and historical practice. As a medium that allows only a few corrections, the basis of watercolor must be understood. Learn the medium’s behavior on wet and dry paper and how to cause accidents without losing control, allowing the medium to express itself and create images that are alive. A variety of topics about the figure: life drawing & painting, nudes & portraits, flesh tones, reserving white from the paper, volume, and color theory. The purpose is to build three-dimensionality from a flat surface, providing life to the human form. There will be lectures, demos, exercises, and one-on-one guidance. All levels of experience are welcome.

Explore three main themes: still life, tablescape, and roomscape. Still life is where we will begin with a focus on a few items. Tablescape uses the ordinary things we find or set on the table. Roomscape or interior still life will use the views of the home and perhaps what’s seen through its windows. Composition will be key. Emphasis will be put on light, transparency, opacity, color and layering. We will explore the properties of various pigments and papers. There will be group critiques and individual instruction. All levels of experience are welcome.
