Design Competition. ARTSTHREAD ANNOUNCE JUDGES FOR GLOBAL DESIGN GRADUATE SHOW 2022 IN COLLABORATION WITH GUCCI

ARTSTHREAD is pleased to announce the list of industry judges participating in this year’s Global Design Graduate Show 2022 in collaboration with GUCCI. Following the success of the inaugural Global Design Graduate Show in 2020, ARTSTHREAD has, for the third year running, teamed up with GUCCI who, as in 2021, will be the exclusive partner for the Global Design Graduate Show 2022. The 2020 show was the first ever online showcase of the world’s leading emerging artists and designers and was created as a proactive response to the cancellation of end of year student exhibitions worldwide due to the pandemic.

It has been ARTSTHREAD’s vision over the last 13 years to support the future generations of creative talent and by teaming up with GUCCI for 2022, ARTSTHREAD will be able to offer students a chance to succeed in gaining employment or launching their own brands during these unprecedented times.

Following on from the roster of high-profile industry judges in 2020 & 2021, ARTSTHREAD and GUCCI have enlisted distinguished and esteemed creatives from across the globe to assist in judging the 2022 competition. We are proud to include Lionel Vermeil, Luxury Prospective Director from Kering amongst our renowned judges. The Global Design Graduate Show 2022 in collaboration with GUCCI is divided per creative specialism, each with its own selection of high-profile judges.

Fall elective School of Design

Now open for enrollment for the Fall 22 term is a new School of Design elective, SOD 401P/601P: Interplay: Ethics and Tactics of Co-design. Intended for seniors and graduate students across disciplines, in this course you will engage is the process of designing with, not for, others. See more in the attached poster below. Course will be held Mondays from 9:00am - 11:50 pm.

Interplay: Ethics and Tactics of Co-Design

Agnieszka Mlicka, Participatory Painting, RCA London, 2016

Co-design is about designing with, not for.
Co-design is a set of principles and tools rooted in the belief that those who are most affected by design thinking should have a say in the design process.
Co-design prioritizes relationships over projects using inclusive convening to share knowledge and power.
Co-design is community-centered design.

Positioning co-design through the framework of gaming and play, this course invites students from across the School of Design to explore how to co-create knowledge, how to share leadership, how to design with empathy, and how to work outside disciplinary norms. A hub for cross-fertilization between creative practices, this course presents the basic principles of co-design as they relate to working across disciplines and with communities. A series of collective gaming and mapping projects will give students the opportunity to facilitate workshops, engage in play-based charrettes, and collaborate with peers from other departments. Equipping students with the tools to become co-creators of just and sustainable communities, this course will empower students to question what impact they want to have on the practice and on the public.

Working towards a collective knowledge exchange, this course will ask:
How might we use play to model reciprocity and communication in community?
How might participatory gaming and mapping strategies help to make visible unseen entities and connections between disciplines?
How might we lower barriers to participation and engagement within our classrooms and our communities?
How might we as designers give up our solitary stake in prescribing visual and spatial identity?
How might informed consent be designed?

Modeling co-design practices that mirror real world multi-disciplinary design studios, this course will introduce a framework for involving all stakeholders in the decision-making process; raising awareness of students’ individual positionalities and preparing them to work in a collaborative capacity beyond the gates of academia.

Summer program in Mexico City August.
I'm reaching out to you today to share the recent launch of the open call for Materia Abierta – the summer program we organize in Mexico City on theory, art, and technology.

Under the title The Rise of the Coyote, Materia Abierta’s 2022 program is curated by Sara Garzón, and will take place in person in Mexico City from August 1 to August 28.

This year’s program is an invitation to take a trip back to Earth. Through the invocation of Huehuecóyotl, the Aztec deity known as the old coyote, we will search for forms of relationality, reciprocity, and mutuality within the natural, ancestral, and human worlds we inhabit. In order to get closer to these pluriversal paradigms, the program will question the historic tendency of Western technologies to exploit the earth and will explore diverse local practices and sociotechnic conditions where technology reveals itself as the capacity to “cultivate life.”

The faculty includes Calpulli Tecalco, Black Quantum Futurism, Paula Gaetano Adi, Laboratorio Lacustre, Michael Marder, Chakanetsa Mavhunga, Mujeres de la Tierra, Pedro Neves Marques and Fernando Palma Rodríguez.

Applications will be accepted until May 23rd, 2022. For more information visit materiaabierta.com and find us on Twitter and Instagram as

Federico Pérez Villoro, who is the director of the program and myself would be more than happy to answer any questions or discuss possibilities to get some of your students involved – it would be wonderful if we can get some Pratt students / alumni to apply.

We would greatly appreciate your help spreading the word and sharing the call with anyone that might be interested in participating.
