Great Tour of Harlem

Me and a friend took this tour on Sat, Aug 15, not knowing what to expect. Well, the guide Carolyn was a walking encyclopedia of all things Harlem! She was witty, knowledgeable, engaging and patient when asking her tons of questions. She took her time as she showed me, a friend and another couple the special sites and sounds of the town she grew up in. We walked a lot, took pictures and took in the ambiance of a city that has been only known for things not so good in the newspapers. Harlem has a rich history and Carolyn pointed it all out I would definitely recommend this tour if you want to learn more than 125th Street (which is basically all I knew). Just bring your sneakers!

1817 : New York State's second Gradual Emancipation law ruled that all slaves born before July 4, 1799 would be freed on July 4, 1827. Enslaved children born between 1817 and July 4, 1827 would remain servants until they were 21. Anyone who tried to export a New York slave or servant to another state would be guilty of a public offence and fined $500.

I WAS IMPRESSED!

I'm a native New Yorker, but when I go uptown I have to get my bearings. Ms. Johnson gives a tour that has history the Harlem with a combination of architecture and how the named streets relate to the numbered streets downtown. It's given at an even pace so you don't feel rushed. I'm going to go back for her other tours and contact her about doing a group tour next year!

1788 : In one of the first actions of the new State of New York, the sale of slaves imported from outside the state was outlawed. This ended the legal slave trade into New York, but did not free slaves already in the state, and the illegal slave trade continued. It was also ruled illegal to buy a slave for the purpose of selling him or her out of state.
