In the aftermath of 9/11, while Lower Manhattan was still covered in smoke, dust, and heartbreak, thousands of workers stepped into the darkness and began the work of bringing New York back. Business agents Robert Vuono, William House and our local 1-2 vice president Thomas Martin were part of that effort.

Utility workers, first responders, and countless others worked around the clock—often in dangerous conditions—to restore power and essential services to Lower Manhattan.
They weren’t looking for recognition. They were simply doing what needed to be done.

Their work helped a wounded city begin to heal, one light at a time. We laid 7000 miles of cable. We shared necessary equipment and respirators with whoever needed it. And that Monday we restored power to Lower Manhattan so the New York Stock Exchange and the Federal Reserve could open back up.

We remember the lives lost. We remember the heroes who ran toward the danger. And we remember the men and women who helped rebuild in the days and weeks that followed.

On September 11, 2001, the truck pictured above was occupied by two Con Edison Manhattan Red Wagon members, Victor Fontanez and Trevor Watts.

Local 1-2 crews were on the ground from the earliest moments of the tragedy, responding in the midst of unimaginable devastation. Thankfully, both men survived to tell their story.

May this photo serve as a powerful reminder of the tragic reality of that day, the lives forever changed, and the courage of those who were there.

Twenty-five years ago, this city lost nearly 3,000 people in a single morning. Firefighters, police officers, EMTs, Port Authority officers, and working people who went to their jobs and never came home.

In the days and weeks after, our members were part of bringing New York back. Utility crews worked the ruins of Lower Manhattan to restore the power, and many of them are still living with what that work cost them. Our Local stands with every member and every family still carrying 9/11 with them.

President Morales joined Con Edison and Local 1-2 members for a private tour of the 9/11 Memorial & Museam, reflecting on the events of September 11 and the lasting impact on New York City and its workers.

The group included shop stewards, Executive Board members, Business Agents, union representatives, and a retired member who worked at Ground Zero in the aftermath of the attacks.
