Hebrew Public is a nonprofit organization providing the resources and services to ensure charter schools’ academic excellence and students’ emotional and social well-being. Our HLA2 scholars kicked off an exciting new Board & Card Game Club as part of our afterschool program! From strategy and critical thinking to teamwork, communication, and—most importantly—having fun, this club gives students a chance to learn and connect in a whole new way. 🧠🤝💚

And the best part? The next class is FREE to try! 🎉

Our afterschool program offers a variety of engaging clubs across our schools, giving students opportunities to explore new interests, build skills, and make memories beyond the classroom.

Four years ago, Viktor Shcherban arrived in New York as a refugee, carrying the weight of unimaginable loss after his father was killed in the war in Ukraine. Adjusting to a new life was not easy, and healing became the priority. Through Hibuki therapy at HLA, Viktor slowly began to process his trauma. 

It was there, in those quiet creative moments, that he revealed not only his talent for drawing, but also a dream he had held since childhood — to become a fine jewelry designer.

That dream became a goal. With dedication, hard work, and his mother’s support, Viktor built a strong portfolio that reflected both his skill and his story. Together, we navigated the specialized high school application process, keeping his vision at the center. Today, we are proud to share that Viktor has been accepted into the Visual Arts program at LaGuardia High School  

His journey is a powerful reminder that even in the face of hardship, dreams can survive — and with the right support, they can become reality. At HLA, we don’t just guide students. We help them rediscover hope, purpose, and their path forward.

A journey shaped by persistence and curiosity.

When Mikhail Lysytsya arrived at HLA from Kyiv, Ukraine, in 5th grade, he spoke very little English. Yet from the very beginning, Misha approached every challenge with determination and a genuine desire to grow.
HLA allowed Misha to strengthen his language skills as a multilingual learner, adapt academically with confidence, and discover the passions that would shape his future.

Over the years, he became known not only for his academic strength but for his creativity and intellectual curiosity. Misha developed a strong passion for 3D modeling, animation, texturing, and 3D printing in HLA’s innovative computer lab, while also enjoying coding and reading in his free time at home. Inspired by HLA’s teachers, Misha discovered a love for math and social studies, subjects in which he continued to thrive academically.

At HLA, he became an active member of both the Chess and Debate teams, earning multiple recognitions and consistently achieving HLA’s Principal’s and Honor Roll status. His hard work and growth opened remarkable opportunities.

Misha earned acceptance to Xaverian High School with a partial scholarship, as well as an offer from Goldstein High School.

Our founding first and second graders are learning an important lesson about kindness and empathy. 💛

After reading a book about kindness, students took part in a powerful activity: they squeezed toothpaste out of a tube and then tried to put it back in using a toothpick.

Of course, it’s impossible—and that’s the lesson. Just like toothpaste can’t be put back into the tube, once our words come out, we can’t take them back.

Choose your words carefully. Choose kindness. Practice empathy.

A simple but powerful lesson—and one we’re proud to teach our children across all Hebrew Public schools including our newest school Kesher Academy Charter School . 💛
