Tony-winner Alex Newell is in the studio preparing to play Rona in SPELLING BEE. There are many strategies for strengthening M2/falsetto in its weakest ranges, but today we explored a wild one… inverse or reverse phonation! I used to think this was little more than a “party trick”, but began to see that over time singers *were* in fact able to hold on to the adjustment/coordination without the inhalatory prompt. As with any tool like this, I advise very short playful explorations as we do not want to invite dryness or pinch/poke/tickle sensations. There’s some fascinating emerging research on inverse phonation and I urge you to check it out!

Get a sneak inside a first session with the delightful Lucy Werner (THE CHER SHOW, ANNIE) as we begin the journey together. All high-intensity singing (like belting and Wagnerian soprano) has the tendency to overshoot the mark, overpressurize, and create a host of domino effects throughout the instrument. A simple CPR mask is one of many possible strategies to begin the process of creating more awareness and an economy of means!
