Bridge to Enter Advanced Mathematics - BEAM BEAM opens up a world of mathematics to underserved students from NYC and LA.

BEAM asks itself, "what do most scientists, mathematicians, engineers, and programmers do growing up?" and then, "how can we bring those same opportunities to underserved students?" BEAM then creates a series of experiences for students in grades 6-college: a 6th grade summer program in New York City; a 7th grade residential summer program on a college campus; and advising from 8th-college to help students attend great high schools, pass algebra in 8th grade, access other enrichment programs, go to a great college, and ultimately enter a STEM career. Through its work, BEAM helps to diversify other enrichment programs and gives students a realistic chance at the career of their dreams.

BEAM students in Los Angeles had the incredible opportunity to visit LA advisory board member Rufus Williams’ farm in Ojai! ☀️🌳

During a delicious breakfast of homemade bagels, Rufus presented on the mathematical concept of infinity. He then provided students with a tour of his beautiful property, demonstrated how to identify fruit trees, and dove into the math behind the card game Spot It. After lunch, students took time to explore the surrounding nature, going on a short hike and dipping their toes in the creek! 🥾

Our students had an incredible day immersed in nature learning about new and exciting mathematical concepts. Thank you, Rufus! 💚

Congratulations to our 2026 class of Summer STEM Scholars, sponsored by Hudson River Trading! 🥳

Every summer, BEAM high schoolers attend rigorous STEM programs around the world, immersing themselves in topics ranging from astrophysics to engineering to robotics. This year, BEAM corporate partner Hudson River Trading awarded stipends to 8 talented BEAM students to help ease the financial burden of taking a summer to pursue STEM.

We’ve had an incredible summer––our six summer camps across New York and Los Angeles have almost wrapped up for the year, and we are so proud of everything our students have accomplished! ☀️

At BEAM Discovery, rising 6th-graders dove into advanced math, learned to think outside the box, and collaborated to solve hard problems. At BEAM Summer Away, our flagship residential program, rising 7th-graders spent three weeks experiencing life on a college campus—living away from home, exploring proof-based math, and finding a second home with BEAM’s math-y community. In these photos, you’ll see our students working on the 100 Problem Challenge, playing tug-of-war, trying out new arts and crafts, visiting a llama farm, and much more! 🦙🎨📐

Please join us in congratulating BEAM’s National Board Chair Dr. Edray Herber Goins on receiving the 2026 Hirsch Research Initiation Grant! 

The Hirsch Research Initiation Fund was established in 1996 by Susan and David Hirsch to fund Pomona College’s faculty research projects. Dr. Goins, a professor of mathematics and statistics at Pomona College, plans to use this grant to tell the stories of mathematicians of the African diaspora. With his research, he sees Pomona being at the forefront of the movement to uncover the stories of Black mathematicians!

Dr. Goins has been a longtime supporter of BEAM and became Chair of BEAM’s National Board of Directors in 2024. Best of luck, Dr. Goins––we look forward to seeing the results of this trailblazing project! ✨

Best of luck to this incredible cohort as they embark on their college journeys! We’re excited to share that our students will be attending some incredible schools in the fall, including Carnegie Mellon, Yale, USC, UCLA, UC San Diego, Pitzer, Harvard, and more.

Last week, 9-11th grade students in New York visited the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center to learn about careers in the medical field! 🏥🩺

The students had their questions answered by a panel of MSKCC staff, including fellows, physicians assistants, biomedical engineers, and nurse practitioners. They explored the premises on an exclusive tour and even had the chance to examine one of MSKCC’s patient models, an interactive artificial patient that prepares medical staff for routine and emergency situations.
