New York City meets Yamagata! Shawn Rawls and Emotions Physical Theatre (EPT) are returning to Oishida for an unforgettable two-day dance event blending contemporary, hip-hop, and ballet with incredible local talent.

"I have been dancing since age 4 and knew from a young age that I wanted to be a dancer. When I was 15, my dance teacher told me that dancing professionally was a real possibility. Since that day, I graduated with a degree in contemporary dance from The Boston Conservatory and moved to NYC to follow that dream.

The chance to participate in an intercultural international tour as a professional dancer early in my career is an incredible opportunity. This trip would allow a dancer from a small town like mine to experience dance at a truly professional level through the joy and excitement of an international tour. It would expose me to everything that comes with it—the physical and mental endurance needed through travel, rehearsals, and performances, and the chance to experience another culture aside from my own. These things are all what that former 15-year-old in me who once sat down with her teacher is eager to soak up and learn."

"This special opportunity would be my first time traveling to Japan, let alone being on that side of the globe. Transparently, a trip to Japan would not only truly be outside of my comfort zone, but equally a unique experience to learn, grow, and share my love of dance with the Japanese culture through EPT. As a dancer, I’ve always strived for movement to be shared and felt by audiences to evoke a greater conversation — a story, an emotion, or even a lesson. The beauty of dance is that it shares a language we all recognize through how movement touches and connects us all - it’s truly the reason why I dance. Traveling to Japan would give me the avenue to do just that and it’s an exciting opportunity I’m eager to dive towards."
