Why I moved to NYC:
Like the t-shirt, “I love NY!” I fell in love with NYC in 2006, when I was a Summer Intern at MTV, during the summer before my Senior year. After getting back to UNCG, Fall of 2006, to end out my Undergraduate career, I started immediately looking and applying for jobs in The Big Apple. However, nothing panned out. Nevertheless, I did not give up. I ended up moving to DC, instead, for a job that allowed me to travel the world, but NYC was still calling me. Fortunately, in 2008, I moved to NYC to work for IBM as a Sales Rep and to this day, in 2013, I still love NYC!

Testimonial:
I fell in love with the great city of New York during my first visit in 2008 and knew that I would someday call this place home. The feeling of freedom, the endless opportunities, the exposure to different cultures and the ability to encounter so many people from different walks of life won me over. After working in NC in the banking industry for just short of 2 years post graduation, I was offered a position in the NYC sales office for a company I’d interned with during college. I had been in two very undesirable entry level positions and finally I was going to do something I would not only enjoy, but that would also challenge me. I moved to NYC with only a few short visits under my belt and very little knowledge of the city. However, I wanted to live here so bad that I was more than willing to undergo the challenges.

Three things I wish I would have known upon arriving here?
1. I probably would have researched the different boroughs to discover where affordability and my lifestyle (music/fashion/photography/art) join forces.
2. I would have taken the time learn the train system…I spent way too much money in cab fare those first few months.
3. I probably would have lived in another city prior to moving here because now that I’m here, I can’t think of anywhere in the world that would offer me the experience I receive here in NYC :-)

Must have site: www.myfreeconcert.com – I’ve been to so many free events thanks to this site!
Must have app: AroundMe – This has been extremely useful when finding banks, restaurants, etc.

MyFreeConcert MyFreeConcert.com is the most complete listing of free concerts, ticket giveaways, and open bars in New York City. The good stuff.

The original plan was to move up here for just the month of July for my cousin's birth. I had a full time job in Tallahassee at Florida State University, where I had just graduated with my masters in International Development Education Studies, as an ESL professor. My aunt, who had lived in NYC for the last 11 years, was pregnant and due to give birth in July.

I took the summer off from my job in Florida and applied to every university in the NYC metro area. After several rejections and no responses for months, I began to think I'd just be up here with no job at all. Finally I heard back from Columbia University. They offered me an adjunct position for July to mid August. I crashed on the couch of two of my good friends and planned to head back to Tallahassee at the end of August.

Columbia ended up offering me a position for the fall and I took it (with my boss' blessing). I rented an apartment in East Harlem with a close friend, who also just moved to the city. Because living expenses are so high I was a teacher at Columbia by night and my cousin's nanny by day. The experience has been awesome and such a blessing, but my time here is soon coming to an end. In January I will be moving to South Africa on a Fulbright grant to teach English and conduct educational research on Critical Pedagogy in post oppressive communities and work with young women on leadership development.

Testimonial: I moved to New York to experience more in my life and to follow my dream in the music industry. First job I found was working for a catering company serving food for the extremely wealthy. A very eye opening experience to see how the other half lives.

What I wish I knew: The true expense of city living; how to use the train (got lost so many times); and which neighborhoods to live in

Apps you must have: Hopstop: to understand the subway system;
Watch ESPN: have to have ESPN ready at all times; Eric Thomas: a motivational speaker who has his own app that I listen to daily; Bible: keep God close; Spotify: gotta have the music
