The Broadway Education Alliance, the fiscal sponsor for the Gershwin Awards, has renamed the program The Roger Rees Awards for Excellence in Student Performance—to celebrate the exceptional life and career-long artistic excellence of Broadway’s beloved actor, Roger Rees. High schools located in Brooklyn, the Bronx, Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island, Long Island and Westchester are invited to apply

New York City Center presented the 2024 Roger Rees Awards Scenic and Costume Designer Showcase. Students were selected based on their unique scenic and costume designs, including relevant research and mood boards, inspired by New York City Center’s upcoming Encores! performance of Titanic.

STEVEN CUEVAS (he/him) is a Filipino American music director, musician, orchestrator, and arranger based in NYC. Meet our Outstanding Performer Music Directors.
ISAAC HARLAN is a Pittsburgh native who studied piano at Penn State University. Since 2010 he has worked in NYC as a pianist, music director and orchestrator. Isaac has played concerts for Norm Lewis, Shoshana Bean, and Brandon Victor Dixon, and has also had the pleasure of working on developing musicals by writers such as Tituss Burgess, Alex Gemignani, MichaelMcElroy, and Black Thought. He accompanies the younger generation of singers through his work with NYU, YoungArts, and the National High School Musical Theatre Awards. Isaac also works with the Broadway Inspirational Voices, a grammy-nominated gospel choir, as a pianist and orchestrator. In the summer of 2022, he was a featured pianist at Little Island’s Music and Dance Festival. Most recently he was orchestrator,conductor and pianist for Sonnets and Soul, a new musical which was produced at Howard University.

Shane Parus is a New York City based music director, pianist, and conductor. National Tours: PRETTY WOMAN, ELF, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, MEMPHIS, WE THE PEOPLE. Regionally, he’s music directed at Westchester Broadway Theatre and The New London Barn Playhouse, in addition to performing in productions at North Shore Music Theatre, The REV Theatre Company, and Mason Street Warehouse. He has worked with Grammy and Tony Award winners and regularly performs with Adam Pascal in concerts and cabarets across the country. This summer, he will be joining the Music Director faculty for the Eugene O’Neill Theatre Center’s Cabaret and Performance Conference. In NYC, he has performed in the BCEFA Easter Bonnet Orchestra at the Minskoff Theatre, and for cabarets at 54 Below, Le Poisson Rouge, The Stonewall Inn, and The Duplex. He also serves on the piano faculty at American Musical and Dramatic Academy in NYC. For many years, he was a band leader, pianist, and percussionist for Holland America Cruise Line and Seabourn Cruise Line. Originally from Manistee, MI, Shane has a Bachelor of Music in percussion performance from Western Michigan University. http://www.shaneparus.com

Our Story
The Roger Rees Awards for Excellence in Student Performance celebrates the exceptional life and career-long artistic excellence of Broadway’s beloved actor, Roger Rees.
High schools located in Brooklyn, the Bronx, Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island, Long Island and Westchester are invited to apply for consideration of their students who have played leading roles in an officially licensed school production during the academic year.
The Roger Rees Awards is a musical theater showcase featuring ensemble and solo performances by students nominated by his/her high school for a panel of judges, industry professionals, family and friends. The event culminates in two students selected to receive The Roger Rees Award for Best Actor and Best Actress. These two young performers will represent Greater New York at the National High School Musical Theatre Awards at the Minskoff Theatre.
