Hooding 2022

And we're BACK! CUNY just completed a full semester of in-person classes. It's been tough to handle covid and carry on via Zoom, but a full semester in-person, with more to come, is a triumph. The graduation ceremony for the Graduate Center was held in-person for the first time since 2019! It had to be held at the enormous Barclays Center because 362 grads walked across that stage and got their doctoral hoods - congratulations to THREE classes: 2000, 2021, and 2022!!

Grads and their profs gathered after the ceremony - Here are (l-r) Doctors David Topel, Candace McCoy, Jeanene Barrett, and 2017 alum Joel Cappellan. (not in picture: Dr. Valerie West) Congratulations to the new Doctors of Philosophy!

We're all digging out from the pandemic and professional moves are picking up! Here's the latest from Dr. Sarah Picard. Congratulations, Sarah!

MDRC is pleased to announce that Sarah Picard has joined MDRC as the new Director of MDRC’s Center for Criminal Justice Research, which seeks to build a more effective and equitable criminal justice system through clear, rigorous, and actionable research evidence.

Defense attorneys for the former Minneapolis police officer who killed George Floyd demonstrated that the old tried-and-true tactics didn't work.

The NEW YORK TIMES loves Marie Springer! Check out this weekend’s financial pages, where her quotes and book are featured.

And oh yeah - don’t fall for a Ponzi scheme!

Experts have seen an increase in the frauds, many of which are preying on investors who feel they lost out on the market gains of the last few years.

Award! Recent alum Jennifer Ortiz received the Outstanding Article of the year award from the American Society of Criminology's Division of Convict Criminology at ASC's virtual conference last month! Jen's award-winner is "The System Is Not Broken, It Is Intentional: The Prison Reentry Industry as Deliberate Structural Violence," PRISON JOURNAL, Vol. 99, No. 4 (2019).

Congrats, Jen! You can find her at the Criminology and Criminal Justice Department of Indiana University - Southeast.

Virtual event with recent alum - Jeanene's dissertation was based on her focus group data -- young people talking about their experiences with stop-question-frisk in NYC. Sign up for the virtual event!

Congratulations to the newest alum! Jeanene Barrett successfully defended her dissertation last month. Here is a screenshot from Zoom taken at the moment her committee informed her she had passed. Let's hear it for Dr. Barrett!

and the beat goes on...
Everyone is working on-line. We're all still here! So keep in touch, alums.
CUNY had to cancel all its in-person events until further notice. So there will be no graduation photos coming up, or awards ceremony photos, but we'll post what comes in.
For instance, last month at the John Jay annual awards ceremony, 2019 Fyfe Fellowship awardee Shamus Smith attended and brought along his mom who flew to New York from California for the occasion. Aw gee!
