We loved watching the students from Lower Manhattan School perform at our 26th Season Gala ✨
They dazzled us with their artistry, bringing the choreography from their Notes in Motion residency with Ms. Angélica to life 💃🕺 Their joy, individuality, and creativity lit up the studio—what a beautiful performance to celebrate our mission! 👏💫

At our 26th Season Gala, we will be honoring two incredible school leaders from District 18. Here’s a background on these superintendents that have made huge contributions to NYC education:
🏫 Superintendent Celeste Terry
• 24-year veteran of NYC Public Schools; served as Teacher, Principal, Model Principal, Deputy Superintendent & now Superintendent
• Removed her middle school from Registration Review in 2 years; launched an award-winning arts program
• Achieved double-digit gains in math & literacy proficiency
• As Deputy Superintendent: launched the district’s first citywide assessment program, strengthened the District/Charter Partnership & introduced Weekly Data Meetings
• Secured funding & expanded professional development opportunities for school leaders
• Served on Mayor de Blasio’s School Culture & Discipline Leadership Team—helped revise the discipline code & expand mental health supports
• Recognized by Robin Hood Foundation (keynote speaker), Senator Roxanne J. Persaud (2024 Women of Distinction), & Council Member Farah Louis (2024 Champions & Change Makers)
🏫 Deputy Superintendent Daveida Daniel
• 20+ year instructional leader advancing equity through academic rigor & the arts
• Deputy Superintendent, Community School District 18—evaluates & coaches principals; leads districtwide initiatives
• Expanded arts access using the My Brother’s Keeper grant—brought dance programming to 18 of 21 schools (partnership with Notes in Motion)
• Former Principal, East Flatbush Community Research School—led turnaround from “Renewal” to “Rise” status & off the state’s persistently dangerous list in 2 years
• Secured $2.5M+ in grants, including National Turnaround Arts Grant & Arts Matter Grant
• Led major school redesign & renovations, integrating arts into core instruction

Amanda Selwyn Dance Theatre/Notes in Motion is rooted in our mission of offering access, nurturing community, and promoting individual expression and freedom. Our dance education programs in the NYC schools offer students tools to express themselves, engage with their peers, and gain a more well rounded school experience.
On Saturday, February 28, 2026 7-10 p.m., Amanda Selwyn Dance Theatre/Notes in Motion will celebrate 26 years of growth, movement & mission at our Season Gala.
