May 18th marks the anniversary of the Gwangju Uprising and this year we decided to focus on the voices of women during this most critical juncture in South Korea’s modern history. 🇰🇷
It ended up being very difficult to find direct witness testimony from women who were a part of this history. There are a number of reasons why and those reasons are an important a piece of the history, along with the testimony itself.
Women made up at least a third of those protesting and organizing during the Gwangju Uprising and yet their stories have not been widely heard, even today. The country was slow to publicly recognize the horrific atrocities of the Gwangju Uprising and, even when they did, women’s stories were completely excluded. That needs to change, as do the reasons why women have stayed silent. Please read on and do your part to help keep this part of history alive.
