Voice departments love to hire star performers who often have negligible teaching experience. They are functionally impresarios.

These star performers are by no means star pedagogues. They do not know how to help you perfect your technique. They may learn over time, but in the early years of their appointment this is not a skill that they possess, and no one will require that they attain it.

They are in a position to tell you whether you are making a consistent, professional sound, but not how to make one if you are not.

Because they are not, functionally, voice teachers. They are impresarios. They can identify singers with star potential and connect them with important people in the industry. That is the reason to study with a star performer.

If you still need to refine your singing technique, find someone who has spent their career getting really good at teaching it.

There is no short cut to singing well. Turn on your recorder and make sure it’s coming out well. The inner ear is not reliable and tension can often be misconstrued for intensity or support.

Meet the Artist Spotlight: Carla Maniscalco-Giovinco, Mezzo-Soprano
We are so excited to introduce the second of our co-producers! Carla is a singer, dancer, teacher, stage manager, production manager, and wardrobe crew member. Carla just finished a production and and will be performing there next week in Aladdin and in august I’m Sleeping Beauty!




Mezzo-soprano Carla Maniscalco-Giovinco is a North Shore based music professional, dancer, teacher, producer and production manager. In fact she is one of the co-producers of North Shore Voices as well as the Director of Productions at MassOpera. She has performed in productions of Evita, La Femme Bohème, The Pirates of Penzance, Le Nozze di Figaro, The Medium, Carmen, Suor Angelica, Lucia di Lammermoor, Dido and Aeneas, Cosi Fan Tutte, Die Zauberflöte, Don Giovanni, and Dialogues of the Carmelites. She is also an avid recitalist and liturgical musician, singing weekend, funeral, and wedding services at several churches throughout the North Shore.
