Fluent Forever The language-learning app for serious learners

Hot take: if you’ve been repeating a word over and over but it still does not sound quite right, it might not be because you’re bad at pronunciation.

Your ears may simply not be hearing the difference yet.

We’re usually taught to start with words and grammar, then just copy what native speakers say. But training your ears first makes the speaking part feel so much less like guesswork.

That’s why our method starts with pronunciation training. You learn to recognise the sounds that matter in your new language, practise hearing the tiny differences, and build the foundation that makes everything else click into place.

Then vocabulary feels easier to remember, native speech starts sounding clearer, and speaking feels far less scary. ✨

Struggling to pronounce a difficult word?

This technique is called backchaining (sometimes called backward chaining).

Instead of repeating the whole word and hoping it eventually sticks, start with the final sound or syllable.

Once that feels comfortable, add the section before it and keep building backwards.

What word is impossible for you to pronounce?

We hope you’ll never need these phrases - but you never know when they could come in handy.

Whether you’re travelling, living abroad, or simply preparing for the unexpected, knowing a few emergency phrases can make all the difference.

In an emergency, every second counts. That’s why it’s worth practising the pronunciation in advance, so the people around you can understand you immediately and get you the help you need.

(Psst - You can practise the pronunciation of every phrase in the Fluent Forever app).

“You need to create the hunger for the word.”

Our founder, Gabe Wyner, joined Mikaela Lefrak of Vermont Public for a discussion alongside Thor Sawin, Associate Dean of Curriculum at Middlebury Language Schools, and Eric Agnero, journalist and French tutor with Alliance Française, to explore how adults can learn languages more effectively.

One of the biggest takeaways? We don’t remember words simply because we’ve studied them - we remember them when we *need* them.

That’s one of the core ideas behind the Fluent Forever method. Rather than memorising isolated vocabulary, we help learners connect new words to situations they can genuinely picture themselves in. A firefighter, for example, is far more likely to remember words they’ll use on the job than random words they’ll never need. That’s because our brains remember vocabulary that’s meaningful and relevant to our own lives.

When you’ve searched for a word, talked around it, and finally found it in a real conversation, you’re far more likely to remember it the next time.

🎧 If you’re curious about the science behind adult language learning, we highly recommend giving the episode a listen. You can find it at vermontpublic.org (podcast titled “Learning a new language as an adult”) or anywhere you get your podcasts!
