Icelanders (https://www.cnbc.com/2026/08/29/iceland-counts-votes-in-tight-referendum-on-eu-membership-talks.html) voted to reject resuming talks to join the European Union (https://www.cnbc.com/european-union/), as issues such as domestic control over fishing appeared to override geopolitical security concerns.
Broadcaster RUV reported (https://www.ruv.is/english/2026-08-29-iceland-rejects-eu-accession-talks-485377) that 52.8% of voters rejected the government’s push to reopen EU membership negotiations, while 47.2% voted in favor.
The question put to the Nordic nation of nearly 400,000 was whether Iceland should resume accession negotiations with the European Union.
A majority “yes” vote would have led to a negotiated agreement being put to a second referendum for Icelanders to accept or reject.
The debate has taken on deeper significance in the wake of U.S. President Donald Trump (https://www.cnbc.com/donald-trump/)’s Arctic saber-rattling (https://www.cnbc.com/2026/07/07/trump-nato-summit-greenland-us-troops-europe.html).
But in the end, concern over the potential loss of control over its fishing industry and an erosion of national identity won out over how Iceland might be affected by geopolitical rivalries.
“The ‘No’ side succeeded because it tapped into the most fundamental driver of Icelandic national identity: the demand for absolute self-governance. This is inextricably linked to control over natural resources and fisheries, which forms the very heart of the Icelandic understanding of sovereignty,” said Eiríkur Bergmann, professor of politics at Iceland’s Bifröst University.
Fishing’s share of Iceland’s broader economy has declined over the decades, even as seafood remains a major export industry.

Iranian trade has fallen sharply under U.S. sanctions and a naval blockade, President Masoud Pezeshkian said, as Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei urged a reduction in reliance on the U.S. dollar.
“We have had a decrease of between 25% and 35%. Our exports have decreased, but imports have decreased more,” Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said (https://www.tasnimnews.ir/.../%D9%BE%D8%B2%D8%B4%DA%A9%DB... (https://www.tasnimnews.ir/fa/news/1405/06/06/3682895/%D9%BE%D8%B2%D8%B4%DA%A9%DB%8C%D8%A7%D9%86-%D8%AF%D8%B4%D9%85%D9%86-%D8%A8%D8%B1%D8%A7%DB%8C-%D8%A8%D9%87-%D9%87%D9%85-%D8%B1%DB%8C%D8%AE%D8%AA%D9%86-%DA%A9%D8%B4%D9%88%D8%B1-%D8%AA%D9%84%D8%A7%D8%B4-%DA%A9%D8%B1%D8%AF-%D8%A7%D9%85%D8%A7-%D8%A8%D8%A7%D9%87%D8%AF%D8%A7%DB%8C%D8%AA-%D8%B1%D9%87%D8%A8%D8%B1%DB%8C-%D8%A7%DB%8C%D8%B3%D8%AA%D8%A7%D8%AF%DB%8C%D9%85?fbclid=IwcGRvZgFleHRuA2FlbQIxMABicmlkETFXb3pNMVdoMDl5Wk56Z0Fsc3J0YwZhcHBfaWQQMjIyMDM5MTc4ODIwMDg5MgABHnRmZdmmlhOeUYkYMyRXw2lW4Y-0UUS321af62Q2BCDm6jVk1Mi3GcEsgHjX_aem_V9ARJ8jkkMGEywPu9-T8iQ)) in an interview late Friday with state TV and according to a Google translation of a Tasnim News transcript. “The decrease in exports is slightly less than the decrease in imports, and imports have decreased significantly.”
“What do these statistics mean? Then some people say that sanctions have no effect at all! I really don’t know what to tell these people,” Pezeshkian was quoted as saying. “I just want to say this, saying that sanctions have no effect is not consistent with these facts.”
Meanwhile, Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei called for greater economic self-reliance in a written message Friday.
“Equally vital is giving special attention to economic growth, boosting production, gradually phasing out the US dollar from playing a pivotal role, and ultimately, making Resistance Economy the central focus,” Mojtaba Khamenei said in a post (https://x.com/MKhamenei_ir/status/2093409566247584251... Iran’s Foreign Ministry on Friday called on “all countries” not to implement U.S. sanctions against Tehran, warning that doing so would represent “complicity” in imposing the “illegal will” of the United States.

We’re not looking to meet or anything.”
Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, however, said (https://x.com/araghchi/status/2093225407742902614 (https://x.com/araghchi/status/2093225407742902614?fbclid=IwcGRvZgFleHRuA2FlbQIxMABicmlkETFwUDJETkZXQjY1cVRXbjd0c3J0YwZhcHBfaWQQMjIyMDM5MTc4ODIwMDg5MgABHrPcYq_VbfuhM-q2fBu07nGnP332uBXq-G56tFlaVbSKmhv7-LtWvzStCHTy_aem_bD9wBSyQ_mkAJgccL9wvWg)) via X on Friday that “putting diplomacy back on track isn’t impossible.”
Araghchi said that following “creative discussions” with Qatari officials on Thursday to reopen a safe transit route through the strait, the potential for renewed negotiations with Washington “hinges on U.S. understanding of one simple fact: pressure doesn’t work.”
He added, “The U.S. should build trust, speak respectfully, acknowledge our rights, and uphold commitments.”
