39% of women reported being interrupted or spoken over more than others at work. Another 38% said their judgment had been questioned in their area of expertise, while 54% experienced at least one competence-based microaggression.

Women’s vocal delivery affected whether they were considered hireable. In a national experiment, listeners preferred women using a normal speaking voice over the same women using vocal fry 86% of the time. The vocal-fry versions were rated less competent, educated, trustworthy and hireable.

And vocal fry is epidemic with young women. You know the sound, the voice grinds in the throat. It’s unpleasant to the ears.

This is one of the top reasons I am a speaker development trainer. The answer isn’t to make women smaller. It’s to give them the vocal skill, presence and conviction to remain fully visible.
