¡Feliz Día de la Independencia! 🎇

Did you know? 💡 On September 15, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica celebrate their independence from Spain (1821). Mexico celebrates its independence on September 16, commemorating the 1810 “Grito de Dolores” that launched the fight against Spanish rule.

At The Open Door, we love celebrating our students — we strive to support them in their goals as they embrace and assimilate into U.S. culture, while remembering and valuing their own unique backgrounds! Many of our students are immigrants from Mexico and Central America.

We finished out our first full week of in-person registrations for this upcoming Fall/Winter 2026 Semester, and we couldn’t be more excited to welcome in all our new students!!! Registration remains open for the entire year in order to help as many people as possible.

There are many opportunities for you to get involved if you’re interested in supporting The Open Door’s mission of serving the immigrant community of the greater NYC metropolitan area and equipping them with English language tools to strengthen their own families and futures. You can volunteer to teach weekly or as a substitute teacher, offer workshops (e.g. on personal finance or health), or make a donation!

We will never forget 9/11. We will never forget how almost 3,000 individuals lost their lives in an attack on our beloved, beautiful city. We will never forget the pain left behind in the families who lost their loved ones.

We will remember. We will remember the heroic actions of everyday people who risked or gave their lives to save others on that day and in the days following. We will remember and honor the fallen. We will remember what "sacrifice" is, its meaning made truer because we know the greatest sacrifice of Jesus Christ who gave his life for us.
