The Prom musical is the story of the right of one girl to bring her girlfriend to prom.

The Color Purple takes place across forty years of American history. There was no prom. There was no activist brigade. There was no one coming to fight for African Americans much less LGBTQ people. There was only two Black women who found each other despite their circumstances.

That’s not a love story. That’s an act of resistance.

In The Prom musical, Emma created the prom she wanted to see. Greta Gerwig’s Barbie had an existential crisis and chose the kind of woman she wanted to be. Two different worlds, each pressuring their heroines to embrace inauthenticity just to exist.

They argued about everything. They waltzed exactly once. Neither of them ever fully recovered.

Prom the Musical asks when is dance just a dance. Or is it the night you dance with the person you’ll spend years pretending you don’t think about?
