The Literacy Crisis is Nationwide.
But as the largest school system in America, NYC has an epidemic on its hands. Over 87,000 of our students in grades 3-8 cannot read proficiently. That does not even include our K-2 and 9-12 students.
This is tragic. We must do better.

Good news, but what about those who are not fortunate enough to have private insurance?
Private insurers must now cover dyslexia evaluations in New York Gov. Kathy Hochul signed legislation mandating coverage for dyslexia assessments that can cost $5,000 or more.

And now, this year, for our most vulnerable students with IEP’s, who require one to one SETSS services to address their individual needs and struggles in reading, in order to save money, they are trying to push off providers who do not have the appropriate training and experience in the Orton-Gillingham methodology.
