Pregnancy serves as a natural stress test for the body and can often be the first cardiac stress test that females experience. This is why the ABC has taken the initiative to address the Black maternal health crisis and the connection between maternal health and cardiovascular disease. Consequently, it is advisable for women with cardiovascular risk factors like high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, or high cholesterol to be referred to a cardiologist during the preconception period to optimize their health before pregnancy.
