9/11: A Day That Changed History
On 11 September 2001, the United States experienced one of the most significant and tragic events in modern history. The attacks, carried out by the terrorist organisation al-Qaeda, changed the course of American history and had a profound impact on international politics, security and society.
That morning, four passenger aeroplanes were hijacked. Two of them were deliberately flown into the World Trade Centre towers in New York City. Another aircraft struck the Pentagon, the headquarters of the United States Department of Defense, near Washington, D.C. The fourth aircraft, United Airlines Flight 93, crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after passengers and crew attempted to regain control of the plane.
A total of 2,977 people were killed in the attacks, including passengers, office workers, emergency responders and people from many different countries. Thousands more were injured, and many others experienced long-term physical and emotional consequences.
The destruction of the World Trade Centre became an unforgettable image around the world. Television broadcasts showed the events unfolding in real time, bringing the tragedy into homes across the globe. In the days and years that followed, the attacks led to major changes in aviation security, counter-terrorism policies and international relations.
The events of 11 September also had consequences far beyond the United States. They influenced wars, diplomatic relationships, immigration policies, airport security and public discussions about terrorism and national security for many years.
History is not only about remembering dates and famous events. It is also about understanding the people, decisions and consequences behind those events. Remembering 9/11 means remembering the thousands of innocent lives that were lost and recognising how deeply one day can affect the world for generations.
