Every year the French Heritage Language Program helps hundreds of young Americans and new immigrants make the most of their French here in the United States. In the US, French is spoken by hundreds of thousands of people, who come from Haiti, West Africa, Canada, and Europe. French is also spoken by Americans from New England and Louisiana. There was a lot to celebrate at our end-of-year party! We handed out awards and certificates of excellence, recognized students who earned the New York State Seal of Biliteracy, listened to alumni testimonials, and selected books at Villa Albertine for some summer reading!

Nous avons eu beaucoup à célébrer à notre fête de fin d’année ! Pour féliciter le travail de nos élèves cette année, nous avons remis des prix et certificats d’excellence, reconnu des élèves qui ont obtenu le New York State Seal of Biliteracy, écouté des témoignages de nos anciens élèves et finalement, nous avons choisi quelques livres à la Villa Albertine pour des lectures d’été !

Last week we hosted a virtual meet-up with FHLP alum Adam A. Fane. Adam is currently in his third year at the Vermont School of Law and also holds a BA in economics and political science from John Jay College. His list of accomplishments is long and continues to grow. Our students were eager to ask questions about Adam’s experiences as a student, intern and networking expert! Thank you, Adam, for sharing so many insights with current FHLP students!

La semaine dernière nous avons organisé une rencontre en ligne avec Adam A. Fane, un ancien élève du programme. Adam est actuellement étudiant en troisième année à Vermont School of Law. Il est aussi diplômé en économie et en science politique de John Jay College. Son CV est déjà long et ne cesse de s’allonger. Nos élèves étaient ravis de poser des questions sur les expériences d’Adam en tant qu’étudiant, stagiaire et expert du réseautage ! Un grand merci à Adam d’avoir partagé tant de conseils avec les élèves actuels du FHLP !

African Film Festival, Inc. was kind enough to invite FHLP students to a screening of two short films, August Visitor and Grace. After the viewing, the filmmakers Ifeyinwa Arinze and Johanna Makabi were on hand to field questions. Our students felt a deep connection to both films and were happy to have the chance to engage directly with the filmmakers.

Le Festival de Film Africain de New York a invité les élèves du FHLP à une projection de deux courts métrages, August Visitor et Grace. Après le visionnage, les cinéastes Ifeyinwa Arinze et Johanna Makabi nous ont rejoint pour répondre aux questions. Nos élèves ont ressenti une profonde affinité pour les films donc ils étaient ravis d'avoir l'occasion d’échanger avec les cinéastes.

Thanks to our new partnership with the Princeton University Program for Community-Engaged Scholarship and Princeton's French Department, FHLP students have had the incredible opportunity to connect on a regular and virtual basis with French-speaking Princeton students. Last week, we were thrilled to celebrate this new collaboration during a visit with our Princeton mentors!
Fabrice Jaumont, Education Attaché for the Embassy of France, helped us kick things off with a talk on the many benefits of bilingual education and how he continues to champion dual-language education in the US and beyond. After a lively Q&A on all things bilingual, we changed venues to visit Manhattan International High School where FHLP students gave a tour of their classrooms. The mentors and mentees capped off the day with a conversation on the education system in both the US and in our students’ countries of origin.
We’d like to thank the Princeton students, Sandie Blaise, Christine Sagnier, ProCES, Fabrice Jaumont, Manhattan International High School and of course our own students!
We are grateful for this partnership with Princeton and look forward to continuing it next year!
Grâce à notre nouveau partenariat avec le ProCES et le département de Français de Princeton, les élèves du FHLP ont eu la belle occasion d’échanger régulièrement en distanciel avec des étudiants francophones de Princeton. La semaine dernière, nous avons eu le plaisir d'accueillir nos mentors de Princeton pour mettre en valeur cette collaboration !
Pour donner le coup d’envoi de la journée, Fabrice Jaumont, attaché à l’éducation de l’ambassade de France, est venu parler des avantages de l’éducation bilingue. Il a également expliqué comment il promeut l’éducation bilingue aux USA et ailleurs. Après cette discussion sur tout ce qui touche au bilinguisme, nous sommes allés au Manhattan International High School où les élèves du FHLP ont fait visiter leur école à leurs mentors. Finalement, les élèves du FHLP et les mentors ont terminé la journée avec une conversation sur le système scolaire aux États-Unis et aux pays d’origines de nos élèves.
Nous tenons à remercier les étudiants de Princeton, Sandie Blaise, Christine Sagnier, ProCES, Fabrice Jaumont, Manhattan International High School et bien sûr, nos propres élèves !
Nous sommes ravis de ce partenariat avec Princeton et nous avons hâte de le relancer l’année prochaine.

It’s never too early to start prepping for college! That’s what FHLP students learned when two of our alums, Aïssatou Doll and El Hadj Bah, spoke about their respective scholarship programs, QuestBridge and The Posse Foundation.
Thanks to the support of these organizations, Aïssatou is now a student at Columbia University and El Hadj is getting ready to matriculate at Franklin & Marshall College this fall!

Il n’est jamais trop tôt pour se préparer à l’université ! Voilà ce que les élèves du FHLP ont appris quand deux de nos anciens élèves, Aïssatou Doll et El Hadj Bah, ont parlé de leurs programmes de bourses respectifs, QuestBridge et The Posse Foundation.

Last Friday, FHLP students from Manhattan International High School had the opportunity to attend a performance of 𝐏𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐯𝐮 𝐪𝐮𝐞 𝐥𝐚 𝐦𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐧𝐞 𝐬𝐨𝐢𝐭 𝐩𝐚𝐬 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐞. This moving production tackles the subject of police violence through a visceral representation of the story of Amadou Diallo, a young Guinean shot and killed by four New York City police officers in 1999.
Our students were riveted by the performance. They were equally engaged during the Q&A session with the artists who collaborated on the play: Hakim Bah, Juan Ignacio Tula and Arthur B. Gillette.

Vendredi dernier, les élèves FHLP de Manhattan International High School ont eu l’occasion d’assister à une performance de 𝐏𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐯𝐮 𝐪𝐮𝐞 𝐥𝐚 𝐦𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐧𝐞 𝐬𝐨𝐢𝐭 𝐩𝐚𝐬 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐞. Cette production bouleversante aborde le sujet de la violence policière avec une représentation viscérale de l’histoire de Amadou Diallo, un jeune guinéen abattu par quatre policiers New Yorkais en 1999.
Nos élèves étaient captivés par le spectacle. Suivant la performance, ils étaient également impatients de participer à une discussion avec les artistes qui ont collaboré à la pièce : Hakim Bah, Juan Ignacio Tula et Arthur B. Gillette.

Le festival de théâtre "Première Scène" du Lycée Français de New York au Lycée Français de New York Cultural Center était, enfin, de retour en personne samedi et les élèves de International Community High School ont, encore une fois représenté le FHLP avec brio.

This week the FHLP continued its virtual College Prep series with a webinar on financial aid. We talked about the numerous available grants and scholarships and how our students can prepare to apply for these types of aid.
At the end of the webinar, we emphasized this key takeaway: college is attainable for all of them.

Cette semaine le FHLP a repris sa série virtuelle sur l’université avec un webinaire sur l’aide financière. Nous avons parlé des nombreuses bourses d’étude disponibles aux USA et des démarches à suivre pour se préparer à faire des demandes d’aide financière.
À la fin du webinaire, nous avons souligné que l’université est accessible à eux tous.
