A large barrier to news and media literacy for young people is fear of being wrong or being ridiculed for voicing their opinions. Promoting news literacy allows young people to feel empowered to initiate those conversations and be confident in their stance - that the information they’re promoting is based in fact. As our campaign comes to a close, we gift you with a copy of our “Dining Table Discussions for Dummies” - A helpful guide to facilitating conversations on a wide range of topics, and encouraging the spread of fact-based news. We hope this cultivates more meaningful dialogue amongst you and your peers. 🗞️🤍

As our campaign comes to a close, we wanted to take a moment and recognize industry expert Andy Katell! Andy works as a journalist for the Associated Press mainly focusing on the ongoing war in Ukraine, and has experience as an educator/trainer in the realm of news literacy. He was gracious enough to provide us with the source materials for the campus workshop we conducted earlier this month, and we are honored to have had some of his research and expertise influence our campaign 📚.

It is easy to feel like technology dominates our lives, but we do have the power to regain control. This can feel like an impossible challenge, but we encourage you to start today on the National Day of Unplugging! This “holiday” encourages us to totally unplug from our devices for 24 hours, which gives us a breather from the physical effects of digital saturation. You’ll find that a day without fast-paced online distractions can encourage mindful habits and release stress, and it reminds us to engage meaningfully with our community. Use this day to take a walk outside, spend time with family & friends, read a book, or pursue a new hobby!
-
As our campaign comes to an end and we prepare to disconnect for good, we wanted to encourage you to do the same and remind you that it IS possible! Don’t let a toxic relationship with technology control your life 💜

PS: we’ll have some ✨exciting✨ news for you to come back to!

Mental health is a major concern across the world, especially as social media continues to boom and younger generations have unlimited access to all that is out there. Thankfully, we are now able to receive help and diagnosis quickly; but that doesn’t take away from the experiences and feelings of those suffering, both young and old. Valentina struggles with her mental health, but is working towards removing the stigma in her family in hopes they too will heal themselves. In honor of World Teen Wellness Day, she did the research and wants to share some facts and resources for you to turn to. 🤍🎗️

As Black History Month comes to an end and we reflect, not only on the past month, but on why this month is so important, we wanted to give you some “certainties” to think about. It is important to be apart of the movement, working towards an equal and healthy future by uplifting the voices and validating the experiences of the oppressed. 💜

Understanding the difference between mis- versus dis-information is vital when spotting fake news and it’s source. Upon first thought, you may not even realise there is a difference! We broke it down for you, but the biggest difference is the intent; disinformation is deliberately false. Either way, they are powerful and destructive - be careful out there! 🗞️💜
