Coming to the Council of the Great City Schools Fall Conference? Join our CEO Dr. Lisa Herring for a conversation with NYC Public Schools Chancellor Kamar Samuels.

Chancellor Samuels, a New Leaders alum, will share insights on his personal journey to leading the largest school system in the country. The conversation will highlight the leadership skills, strategic knowledge, and humanity required to effectively lead complex systems and create lasting impact for students, staff, and communities. It will also focus on how this special moment in time requires courageous, adaptive and civic leadership to ensure that all students and communities have access to high-quality education.

October is National Principals Month, and one of the best ways to honor a principal is to make sure they have what they need to be successful.

They’re the person everyone in the school goes to: teachers, families, and students. So who can a principal turn to when they need support?

That’s where we come in. We provide confidential, trusted thought partnership and coaching for principals. The goal isn’t for us to just give advice. It’s to help school leaders ask the right questions, reflect, analyze and problem-solve.

High school principal Jennie Currin says before she went through our Emerging Leaders program, her professional learning communities were “a little haphazard.” Now, she says PLCs have a clear focus on student outcomes, and she learned how to do something many principals struggle with: have crucial conversations with teachers.

If you train one group of school leaders, the impact doesn’t stop with them. They’ll share what they learned with others, and then those people will coach another group of educators. Principal Jennie Currin and Director of Leadership and Professional Development Faith Stroud at Jefferson County Public Schools have watched it happen.

Today is World Teachers Day. I’m sure all of us have a story about a teacher who inspired, motivated and pushed us to be our best selves in the classroom and beyond. Our CEO Dr. Lisa Herring credits three educators for shaping her life: her high school principal, a college English professor, and her mother, who she says wasn’t a formal teacher, but a teacher at heart.

It gave them the opportunity to reflect on where we've been and what we've learned, and plan for what's ahead.
