Brooklyn Tech Career Day is just three weeks away, on Thursday, November 5! Sign up now. Registration closes October 22, so don’t wait! https://alumni.bthsalumni.org/e/2026-career-day/

We’re calling on alumni and friends from every field, including engineers, lawyers, entertainers, entrepreneurs, and creatives, to inspire the next generation of Technites.

Your path may not have been traditional, and that’s what makes your story worth sharing. The detours, the doubts, and the lessons you learned along the way could be the encouragement a student needs right now.

If you remember what it was like to be a junior or senior at Tech, wondering what comes next, this is your chance to give back. Share your college experience, career journey, and advice with students who are right where you once were. You’ll also reconnect with Tech and meet fellow alumni professionals.

Breakfast and lunch are on us!

Happy Ada Lovelace Day! 💙🔬

Today we're celebrating Emma Costa, Ph.D. '14, a Brooklyn Tech alum, Class of 2014 valedictorian, and Senior Biomedical Data Manager at Sage Bionetworks.

A true trailblazer, Costa was part of the pilot cohort for the Weston Research Scholars Program. She went on to study at MIT, worked as a molecular biology lab technician at Google Accelerated Science, and earned her Ph.D. in neuroscience from Stanford University.

And she hasn't slowed down since. She was a 2025 Christine Mirzayan Science & Technology Policy Fellow at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, and today she curates data for the AD Knowledge Portal at Sage Bionetworks, advancing transparency and collaboration in Alzheimer's research.

A neuroscientist with expertise in molecular biology and genomics, Costa is deeply committed to open science and STEM workforce development.

Congratulations, Emma. Tech is proud of you! 🔬

Hispanic Heritage Month Spotlight: Dr. Michael Estrella

A Brooklyn Tech graduate. A PhD scientist. A former chemist at Brookhaven National Laboratory. A researcher trained at Johns Hopkins University and Princeton University.

Now, he’s a biology teacher back at his alma mater, mentoring the next generation of scientists through the Alumni Foundation’s Weston Research Scholars Program.

After earning his PhD in Biochemistry and completing postdoctoral training, Dr. Estrella returned to where his scientific path began.

“I was able to become a teacher at my alma mater high school, Brooklyn Technical, and teach a research class along with 12th grade genetics… It’s a wonderful sight to behold the remarkable transformation of kids going from students to leaders and researchers.”

His Genetics classroom is a hub of project-based learning, where students use hands-on molecular biology techniques found in contemporary research labs. Beyond awards and competitions, they discover academic passions, choose college majors with confidence, and chart career paths in science and medicine. They see themselves not just as students, but as researchers.

This Hispanic Heritage Month, we’re proud to celebrate an alumnus who came back to Tech to help today’s students believe in themselves.

We’re just a few weeks away from Brooklyn Tech Career Day on Thursday, November 5, and we still need 100 professionals to step forward and inspire our students.

You don’t need to have a traditional career path or a perfect roadmap. In fact, the unexpected turns, lessons learned, and challenges overcome may be exactly what a student needs to hear. Enjoy a day filled with inspiration and opportunity to impact and network.

Hispanic Heritage Month Spotlight: Raquel Maysonet-Sigler ’87 💙💙💙
🔗Read Raquel's full story: bthsalumni.org/raquelmaysonetsigler

More than three decades after graduating from Brooklyn Tech, Raquel Maysonet-Sigler ’87 returned to the school that helped shape her life.
Today, she serves as a Tech counselor and coach, helping students navigate the challenges of high school, envision their futures, and discover their own potential.

Her journey has come full circle. As a student, Raquel traveled from the Bronx to Brooklyn on the D train. Today, when she meets students making that same journey, she sees herself in them.

And her impact extends beyond the counseling office. In tribute to her late high school cheer coach and mentor, Elizabeth Sciabarra, who passed away in November 2022, Raquel revived Brooklyn Tech’s cheerleading team for the 2023–2024 season. In doing so, she honored a meaningful legacy in her own life, carried on by successive coaches, while restoring an opportunity for today’s students to experience the same sense of belonging, discipline, and accomplishment. She also helped lead Brooklyn Tech’s PSAL Stunt team to back-to-back city championships in 2025 and 2026.

But for Raquel, coaching is about much more than competition. It is about helping young women develop confidence, leadership, communication, teamwork, and the understanding that hard work can take them somewhere.

As Raquel puts it, “Relationships matter.”

This Hispanic Heritage Month, we’re proud to celebrate an alumna who came back to Tech not only to give back, but to help today’s students believe in themselves.

It was a special day at Brooklyn Tech yesterday as we welcomed back Hall of Fame alumnus Bernard R. Gifford, Ph.D. ’61! 💙

Dr. Gifford stopped by for a visit, and it was wonderful to have him back in the halls of the school that helped shape his remarkable journey.

A scientist, educator, and true change agent, Dr. Gifford was the first person in his family to graduate from high school. He went on to earn a Ph.D. in biophysics from the University of Rochester Medical School and built an extraordinary career dedicated to education and expanding opportunity for students.

His many accomplishments include serving as Deputy Chancellor of the NYC Public Schools, Dean of the Graduate School of Education at UC Berkeley, and Vice President of Education at Apple Computer, Inc. He has spent his career championing high academic standards and ensuring that students have the opportunity to reach their full potential.

Inducted into the Brooklyn Tech Alumni Hall of Fame in 2005, Dr. Gifford is a wonderful example of the extraordinary impact that a Brooklyn Tech education can have, not only on an individual, but on generations of students.

We were honored to welcome him home. Once a Technite, always a Technite! 💙
