Rhyme Deferred came directly from the Jazz and Poetry Cipher at Howard University in the early 1990s. this is when i started taking record collecting seriously.

By the time i graduated high school in Rockville MD and attended Howard in the fall of 1992, i had been listening to hip hop for over 9 years, starting in 1982 when my father bought me a solid state stereo system with an 8 track player for which he also bought me the Hotter Than July 8 Track Tape from Stevie Wonder. the following year, after i made a boo boo and put a paper clip into the quarter-i

nch headphone jack (preventing an audio signal from reaching the speakers and not knowing that there was such thing as studio headphones), i was bought a JVC boombox with AM/FM/SW1/SW2 (the latter 2 being ShortWave radio where i could hear international transmissions from Europe). with that radio my friend Kobie Nettles and Jason Renders (Malik al-Jaime) told me about a radio show on 90.1 FM WDCU University of the District of Columbia featuring Frank Ski and DJ Larry G. i became hooked instantly and i believe i still have the very first cassette i recorded from that show, thanks to DJ GrandMaster Supreme (DJ Supreme the GrandMaster).

i arrived at Howard and continued to listen to the radio on the same JVC boom box and was also dubbing shows on a dual recorder JVC tape deck. DJ Iran, DJ Paul Howard, DJ Celo (SupaFunkRegulata Celo), and DJ John Doe, were all in the mix on WKYS-FM 93.9 which broadcasted from the same location near American University as NBC and WNBC channel 4. Mischa E Thompson from Detroit became friends with me after i "stole" her from my roommate and she got me a radio show on the local campus station WHBC am830 Howard's Personal Vibe. She had her own show and even invited her younger sister to visit Howard when she was thinking about which college she might attend after High School. on my show i ended up interviewing The Last Poets, Digable Planets, Masta Ace Incorporated (Ase and Lord Digga), The Fugees (Ms Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean, Praz), and Burro Banton. i also ended up getting lots of free records they were discarding but paid attention to what was in the vault: a pair of promo 12 inch records by Two Kings in a Cipher called Movin' On 'Em with the "Hard" remix vocal and remix instrumental on it. in 1994 i made a mixtape called Proceed To Think utilizing this "Stolen Moment" and took that instrumental and put Dwyck Acapella over top of it, followed by the same acapella over Black Moon Who Got The Props instrumental. DJ Young Guru heard this and was certainly curious how i was able to mix this mix, realizing that instead of having genuine industry contacts at the label for Two Kings, i simply gaffled the music to make an ill mix.

by the time 1997 rolled around i had amassed a very sizeable amount of records, most of them purchased at 12-inch Dance Records in Dupont Circle, but quite a few that had been given to me by Demetrous Jones's aunt Michelle Wright, the actual vinyl / mobile DJ, not the radio personality from WPGC. Kamilah Forbes and i were very close during those years between 1994 and when we graduated in 1998, so on 23rd April 1998, my father's 79th birthday, i performed as one of 2 DJ's in the play Rhyme Deferred, for which i had also been asked by her to create the flyers for. ( i actually went against her wishes and designed the first version of the flyer with the word "Rhime" Deferred instead of "Rhyme" Deferred, to give reverence to the ATCQ song "Check the Rhime" which had a b-side called "if the papes came" that sampled the jazz drums from Lou Donaldson Pot Belly as did CMW's Drive By Miss Daisy. The story is a prophecy in my life and definitely was my formal introduction of getting to know God The Black Womban personally and intimately. Kamilah and Chad both knew the Bible but i did not since my father was an atheist and kept me from going to church (not against my will necessariy, but even moreso because he did not want his sister from Queens NY to brainwash me into Adventism as a blind follower that does not think for himself).

in the coming time period this next few months i will be documenting many of my friends and family who have been entrenched deeply in this thing called hip hop since the times i started listening in the 80s. my first article will be about S.O.U.L.Food Symphony which is founded by Tiye Phoenix and features Zynzelay and a host of the finest women. my second article will be about Ayanna Gregory. after that i will get into whatever list i believe follows the principle of 1 Corinthians 14, verse 40 : "All things must be done in order". .... which i simply call doing things in the "order of operation", not the "order of priority" or "order of significance".

Rhyme Deferred, which is in "THE FIRE THIS TIME" which you may find a softcover copy of at the NYPL or Library of Congress is about me perpetually deferring my student loans while using my checks from the Homecoming Steering Committee for which Kamilah was my volunteer October 3rd 1994 in Burr Gym for the Second Rhythm And Poetry Cipher and my weekly stipend as Resident Assistant at Drew Hall for which i created the First Rhythm And Poetry Cipher, where TaNehisi Coates read a powerful poem that catapulted him as a writer and where he opened for The Roots (Black Thought Tarik Trotter, Brother Question Amir Thompson). Tiye Phoenix did WorldWide with SOULFood Symphony TaNehisi and Tiye are from your neck of the woods and i grew up in Silver Spring in Montgomery County MD. i actually did an Odyssey Of The Mind performance in 7th grade from Sligo Stallions Middle School at UMBC. we built a wooden and cardboard Shark with shopping cart casters and that was the first time i heard My Mic Sound Nice by Salt N Pepa in 1987. i played it live on V103 on my JVC boom box which i brought on the school bus from Wheaton/Forest Glen to UMBC.

Tarik and Amir cursed me because of a 300 dollar accounting error i made and eventually got with Spike Lee to make Bamboozled to mock me for having created a C**n Show. Savion Glover looks like me. and the guy that got shot by Jada Pinkett's revolver at the end of the movie was wearing an identical trench coat to my father's, Andre Clement Toussaint, who was 74 years old when he showed up at the First Rhythm And Poetry Cipher on 25 February 1994, the night of TaNehisi's reading, his final time he would ever read poetry that way, he told me.
