NYU is pleased to announce that Denis Zorin will be the next dean of the Courant Institute School of Mathematics, Computing, and Data Science beginning this coming academic year. He brings to this critical role a record of visionary, cross-school leadership that has positioned NYU at the forefront of research and scholarship. He was the Silver Professor of Computer Science and Mathematics and the former chair of the Department of Computer Science. Zorin also played a prominent role in leading NYU’s Artificial Intelligence Initiative, overseeing the hiring of 30 new tenure-line faculty, and establishing NYU’s first degree programs in data science. When 9/11 happened, Jeremy Del Rio (CAS ’95, LAW ’99) knew his time as a corporate lawyer was over. Soon after, he became fully committed to restoring hope to New York City through art and eventually co-established the Thrive Collective, a nonprofit organization that nurtures collaborations between public school students and mentoring professional artists. Today, more than 40,000 students from over 300 schools have contributed and you can’t walk through the Lower East Side without coming across one of Thrive’s 800 colorful street murals, which are a counterforce to the precipitous decline in public school arts funding.

NYU is pleased to share that interim vice chancellor and NYU alum Fabio Piano (GSAS ’91, ’93, ’95) has agreed to serve as NYU Abu Dhabi’s next vice chancellor. He steps into this new position knowing every asset of the NYUAD community. As the campus’ provost from 2010 to 2020, Piano directed the academic launch of NYUAD’s temporary campus and guided the design and transition to its permanent campus on Saadiyat Island. Piano also played a pivotal role in the evolution of NYUAD’s academic life, helping to establish the undergraduate program—and to introduce the campus’s global PhD initiative as well as master’s programs in economics and the fine arts. That work laid the foundations for what NYUAD has become: a globally recognized research university whose contribution reaches from Abu Dhabi and the NYU community to the wider world, through education, research, innovation, and the development of future leaders. A gifted biologist, he spent over a decade as founding director of NYU’s Center for Genomics and Systems Biology before heading to Abu Dhabi. Read the full announcement: https://bit.ly/4cfuSYt

So we asked NYU alumni to share the places, meals, and moments every incoming student should experience before they graduate, and they delivered.

A former NYU student-athlete and coach, Chiené Joy Jones (SPS ’13) has always believed that basketball was more than just a sport—it was also a means for learning leadership, confidence, and resilience. Chiené noticed, however, there were few opportunities for young girls to learn these life skills through basketball. Frustrated by this gap, she founded Grow Our Game and now serves as its Executive Director. What began as a small, free program for only six girls eventually became an official nonprofit that now serves nearly 300 girls between ages 4 and 18. “We are ending generational poverty through the power of sport,” Chiené says. “That’s a lot bigger than the game itself.”

Sissi Wang Xiya (NYUSH ’26), a finance major and mathematics minor at NYU Shanghai, began her watercolor series “上纽·绘” (In Lines, We Lived at NYU Shanghai) after studying away at NYU’s Washington Square campus during her junior year. Inspired by the architecture, atmosphere, people, and academic experiences she encountered in both Shanghai and New York, Sissi’s paintings capture the small moments that shaped her university experience.
