Scenes from WORKS 1.

The first WORKS session looks into the HIGH LINE with James Corner (Field Operations) Field Operations and Elizabeth Diller (DS+R, Princeton) Diller Scofidio + Renfro.

WORKS is a new GSAPP series that discusses projects that have contributed to the production of realities through the mobilization of resources, agendas, and constituencies; by connecting distant scales and actors; and as active components within broader social, ecological, cultural, and political transformations. Underlying WORKS is a question of growing urgency: What is the most meaningful use of our disciplines, our practices, and our forms of knowledge today? What capacities must architecture, preservation, real estate, and urbanism cultivate to participate substantively in addressing the challenges that define the present?

CUTOFF PLAZAS explores housing within the industrial landscape of Long Island City’s Montauk Cutoff, a former freight rail line.

The project partially removes an existing warehouse to open the ground as a series of public plazas and introduces two housing blocks along the railway landscape. Large shear walls organize different housing types and establish a sequence from public plazas to shared residential spaces and individual units.
