I am attending DoDIIS Worldwide in Tampa this week. It is the Defense Intelligence Agency conference, and this year the theme is intelligence technology for battlespace lethality. Thousands of people from government, military, industry and allied countries, all in one hall, talking about how AI changes the way wars are fought and won.

These are my first thoughts.

The biggest shift I see is that AI is not really a new weapon. It is a new clock. The advantage is moving away from who owns the most expensive platform, toward who can get from observation to decision the fastest and still defend that decision afterward. Two things follow from that. Mass becomes cheap again, because cheap autonomous systems you can afford to lose change the math of deterrence. And the real contest moves to the data layer, because poisoning a training set is much quieter than destroying a runway, and possibly more decisive.

What stays with me though is the part nobody has solved yet. When both sides field machines that act faster than leaders can even get on a call, the space to slow down and think starts to disappear. Being fast is good until you are moving too fast to change your mind. We are racing to make war faster than we are building the ability to explain it, and any system that cannot show its reasoning should not be trusted with a decision that ends a life. The winners will not simply be the fastest. They will be the ones who can move at machine speed and still stay accountable at human speed.
