🌍 He Left Home 28 Years Ago… and He’s Finally Coming Back
Imagine leaving your home in 1998 with one crazy goal:
Walk around the world… and come back home without using transportation to move forward.
That’s exactly what British adventurer Karl Bushby decided to do.
At just 29 years old, the former British paratrooper left Punta Arenas, Chile, on November 1, 1998. He had only a few hundred dollars and a huge amount of determination.
His rules were simple:
🚶 No transportation to advance the journey.
🏠 No returning home until the journey was completed on foot.
What he thought would take around 12 years turned into an almost 28-year adventure.
He walked across South America, battled through the dangerous Darién Gap, travelled through North America and Alaska, crossed the frozen Bering Strait, continued through Russia and Asia, and even became the first person known to swim across the Caspian Sea as part of an unbroken journey.
Along the way, he faced extreme weather, dangerous terrain, border restrictions, visa problems, financial struggles, injuries, arrests and years of delays.
But he kept going.
And then came the final obstacle.
The English Channel.
Instead of taking a plane or other transportation, Bushby ultimately crossed the Channel by swimming, spending around 20 hours in the water over three days, before finally reaching British soil at Shakespeare Beach near Dover on October 5, 2026.
After 28 years, more than 50,000 kilometres, and 29 countries, he is finally back in the UK.
But there is still one last walk.
He now has to travel from Dover to his mother’s home in Hull.
The man who left home nearly three decades ago is finally walking back to the place where it all started.
Think about that for a second…
When Karl left in 1998, there were no smartphones, no Instagram, no TikTok, and technology looked completely different.
He watched the world change while he kept walking.
And now, after almost three decades, his journey is coming to an end.
Sometimes the hardest part of achieving a dream isn’t starting…
It’s continuing when the dream takes far longer than you ever imagined. ❤️🌍
