Spotlight Post: College and ADHD
It’s that time of year when many college students start feeling overwhelmed. Even with accommodations, the workload can be intense, and too often, they’re unfairly labeled as “lazy.” As parents, we may wonder, “Is this our fault? Could we have done more?”
When the pressure builds, self-esteem often takes a hit. With support, though, students can break the cycle of negativity and find their footing.
Myth: College students with ADHD are just lazy.
Truth: False! Many students feel overwhelmed from managing a full course load, heavy assignments, and focus challenges—even with medication.
Myth: Students with ADHD must finish college in four years.
Truth: False! Students need to go at their own pace and develop essential executive functioning skills: prioritizing, balancing work and social life, and channeling anxiety productively.
Parents, you’re not at fault, but your child may need guidance. This journey can start today. Keep communication open with your college student, even when the answers are tough to hear. Non-judgment fosters honesty.
If you’re looking for extra support, I currently have one virtual morning spot open for executive functioning coaching. Reach out at [email protected].
