The Most Dangerous Drink in American History.
The US Government once deliberately poisoned its own citizens to win a political argument. It killed over 10,000 people. ☠️🇺🇸
We often think of Prohibition (1920–1933) as a time of speakeasies, flapper girls, and Al Capone running rum. But there is a much darker side that isn't taught in history books.
When the government banned alcohol, bootleggers started stealing "industrial alcohol", the kind used in paints, solvents, and fuels. It was cheap, potent, and readily available. To stop this, the Coolidge administration decided to take drastic measures. They didn't just increase security; they ordered chemists to "denature" the industrial alcohol by adding lethal poisons.
We aren't talking about making it taste bad. They added kerosene, chloroform, and most deadlily methyl alcohol.
The logic was ruthless: "If the alcohol kills them, people will stop drinking it."
Did it work? No. People kept drinking. But now, they were dying in agony. On Christmas Eve 1926 alone, 60 people arrived at New York’s Bellevue Hospital hallucinating and blinded by the poisoned liquor. By the time Prohibition ended, an estimated 10,000 Americans had died directly from this government-mandated poisoning program.
The Chief Medical Examiner of NYC at the time, Charles Norris, called it exactly what it was: "Our government has engaged in the chemical warfare of its own people."
