Meet Leah, a dedicated New York City public high school art teacher who has spent the last 25 years inspiring students far beyond the classroom walls. 🎨🍎

Leah saw Assane's talent and encouraged him to pursue opportunities that opened doors to the next one, to which Assane credits Leah for where it all began.📽 Follow along as we share more clips from Assane and Leah’s journey throughout our summer appeal and see the inspiring impact arts education can have.💫

Meet Assane, six years ago, Assane came to NYC from Senegal to study science, viewing his passion for photography as just a hobby. That changed when he met Leah, an art teacher in his GED program. Neither of them knew how transformative their connection—fostered through ArtsConnection—would become. ✨

Their story is a powerful reminder of the life-changing impact of arts education. Follow for more clips from their story during our summer appeal.

🎨Arts education in NYC is still underfunded, and our leadership is taking a stand. Our Director of Development and Communication, Dionne, recently spoke at the Support for Arts Instruction press conference at PS 38 Roberto Clemente. And our Executive Director, Rachel, joined educators, advocates, and City Council Members at the “It Starts with the Arts” Rally and Oversight Hearing.

The facts are sobering:
👉Just 31% of 8th graders met state learning requirements for arts education last year
👉379 schools still lack a certified arts teacher
👉New funding reaches only 239 of 1,700 schools

Support Remote Arts Learning

ArtsConnection is one of the oldest arts education organizations in New York City for a reason: for over 42 years, its gathering of educators, artists, and New Yorkers who care has been determined to connect students with the arts no matter what else was going on around the globe or in our city. Now, as the world reels at this uncertain time, we are still at the forefront of arts education in New York City, digitally connecting students and their families to vital arts programming. The day after the mayor announced schools would be closing, we were on Zoom devising ways to continue our arts programs, providing consistency and creating community along the way. We’re working tirelessly to bring dance, theater, visual arts, music and more to NYC kids and the larger global community. We’re supporting young creators with top-notch arts instruction and the social emotional learning the arts so deftly offers that is so important now. We’re there because we care.

We know you care too. We can only keep supporting NYC kids if you support us. Put your care into action by helping us keep children, teens, schools and families #WeAreArtsConnected — Click on the donate button above to give today!
