✅ All reading is good reading
Magazines, graphic novels and poems count too!

🤓 Model reading for pleasure
Kids will copy what they see. Show them how much fun reading can be!

Writing starts way before kids are ready for letters. Mastering the art of scribbling helps build fine motor skills, hand strength and joy of creating 🖍️

Once they’ve got these steps down, here are a few other signs of writing readiness to look out for:

〰️ Drawing lines

↪️ Drawing curves

✍️ Appropriate pencil grip

Remember, the best learning happens when kids get to make their own marks 🎨

There is so much noise when it comes to raising a reader so here’s what really matters.

✅ Being read to EVERY day
✅ Rhyming, syllable splitting and sound blending
✅ Learning accurate letter sounds
✅ Letting kids grow at their own pace

What is some of the worst advice you’ve heard when it comes to teaching your child to read?

Building foundational reading skills doesn’t have to happen with flashcards and worksheets. Music provides so many opportunities for kids to rhyme, syllable split, or identify the beginning sound of words, which are all skills needed for reading and writing ✏️

Before kids can spell, they need to develop the foundational skills to break apart sounds. And the best part? All of those skills can be developed through play!

I know I won’t be popular for saying this but our kids aren’t reading because we’re not reading.

Here’s how I changed my own relationship with reading:

🎧 Audiobooks count

📕 Pick short, easy reads or re-read something you once loved

👍Be nice to yourself. Learning a new hobby takes time and patience. You deserve both.

We all know it’s important for kids to read at home but it’s equally important that kids have grownups in their lives who read for fun.

So, let’s get the ball rolling. Share in the comments a book that you loved. It may inspire someone else to give it a try 📚❤️
