The Jewish Children’s Museum provides exhibitions and programs for all children in an educational and entertaining format. Through contemporary technology and a hands-on approach to learning, visitors experience Jewish history, values and traditions in a manner that inspires an increased interest in Jewish culture. Primarily, the Museum serves elementary school-age children and their families, and is a resource and model, nationally and internationally, for interactive education on Jewish themes. The Museum is a setting for children of all faiths and backgrounds to gain a positive perspective and awareness of the Jewish heritage, fostering tolerance and understanding.

Live in a hut for 7 days - why?

On Sukkot, sitting in the embrace of the Sukkah commemorates how Hashem (G-d) protected the Jewish people with the Clouds of Glory in the desert after leaving Egypt.

Leaving the comfort of the home to spend time in the Sukkah shows trust in G-d as He took care of the Jews in the desert.

Looking up through the Sukkah’s roof of greenery and seeing the stars is a reminder of how awe-inspiring and great Hashem is - He can do anything!✨

Lekach🥮 - Lekach is sweet honey cake. It is customary to ask for a slice of Lekach and eat it on Erev Yom Kippur. The reason: If it was decided in heaven that we would need to ask others for charity during the upcoming year, we fulfill that now by asking for Lekach.

Candles🕯️- In addition to Shabbat, many Jewish holidays are ushered in by lighting candles, including the holiday of Yom Kippur.

Kapparot🐔 - Kapparot is a ritual performed anytime during the days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, but is preferably done very early on the morning of Erev Yom Kippur itself.
Kapparot consists of passing a chicken over the head while reciting special prayers. It is then slaughtered in accordance with Jewish law and donated to a charitable cause.
If one were destined to receive severe decrees in the new year, we ask G-d to transfer them to the chicken in the merit of the mitzvah of charity.

Leather shoes👟 - On Yom Kippur, we show the degree of our remorse for the mistakes we made in the past year through fasting, as well as refraining from wearing leather shoes, which until recent times were the primary material used for crafting shoes.

Banging the chest✊ - A prayer called “Al Chet”, recited multiple times throughout Yom Kippur, is accompanied by banging the chest. The prayer consists of verbally confessing what we may have done wrong, which is already a step toward forgiveness. As for banging chests, it's done over the heart because the heart is a person’s life source, and through wrongdoing one affects their very life.

The Shofar🔊 - After fasting and praying all Yom Kippur long, as the day nears its end, we are certain that G-d will inscribe us for a sweet new year. Like soldiers returning victorious from battle and blowing trumpets to signal their joy, we too blow the shofar at the end of Yom Kippur to express joy and certainty that we have won over the prosecuting angel (also known as Satan) and will have a good, sweet year.

Who will be the winner?
Each gumball has the chance to be given as Tzedakah (charity) to different important causes. Can you guess which gumball will make it to its destination first?

During the days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, we make a point to do extra acts of goodness and kindness, especially giving more Tzedakah! Tzedakah often means giving money to someone who needs it, but can also be giving clothes or food to someone who has less than us.
As we get ready for a sweet new year, remember that every act of kindness counts! So pick your gumball, cheer it on, and remember the real winner is YOU every time you give Tzedakah.

The Jewish Children’s Museum is back with another discovery room🙌 - this time it’s the Tishrei Discovery Room! (Tishrei is the first of the Jewish months, and includes the High Holidays, Sukkot, and Simchat Torah.)
Explore the sounds of the Tishrei Holidays, or build your own Sukkah. Play with the Tashlich sensory bin, or have fun at the Tishrei weigh station! Decorate your own Shana Tova card, or try your hand at the Tishrei magnet-by-number board.

It’s a place to discover the special Mitzvot of Tishrei while having fun💫.
